My wife and I are looking at visiting Essex in mid September from Australia we would be visiting my mother age 96 and brother age71 in Dagenham who looks after her. Having no luck at finding suitable accommodation in the Dagenham area chelmsford looked like a nice place to base our selfs. We are looking for some reasonably priced accommodation preferably B&B dose any one know of any we would like to stay for two / three weeks.

With Thanks Christopher B

Chelmsford would not be a good choice for visiting Dagenham, as there is no direct train.

Ilford, where there are several cheap chain and B&B hotels, is within an easy bus ride. If you want somewhere less urban, will you have a hire car?

Romford has a couple of b & b s as well as the low priced chain hotels. Otherwise southend has a direct link to the southern edge of the borough.

Dagenham is a large place, which road

Dagenam East and Dagenham Heathway are both stations on the District Line tube, so anywhere along that line would be a better place to stay than Chelmsford.

Dagenham Dock is a station on the C2C Rail Line, so again, anywhere along there would be a better place for you to stay.

Loughtonian and Amos H have both given decent suggestions, I will have a think about the above, and post back.

However, if you do say the road, or the postcode of the home you want to visit, you will get better help with train and bus suggestions, and for sure more tailored advice on where to stay....

Thanks so much for your help my mother lives at Dagenham heathway so I know about the district line and I did live in Dagenham until coming to Australia some forty years ago we do intend to hire a small car so getting to Dagenham will be no trouble. At the moment we are just trying to work out how much money it will cost. It's just that mum and bother only have a two bedroom house so unable to stay with them so are looking to save on accommodation .

Thanks for all your suggestions Christopher B

With a car, then Chelmsford does become somewhat more feasable, though it is a bit of a moot point as to whether it is a nice place, or not!

It is a sprawling town that used to have a lot of light industry going on. With the loss of Marconi and the very recent closure of Britvic, this is getting less and there are many run-down buildings around.

However, there is also a lot of "good"! The town centre has extensive shopping, some interesting old buldings like the Shire Hall and some nice walks along the River. There are some lovely parks, including Hylands, and easy access out into the countryside.

If you wait for the rush-hour to subside, then the A12, M25 and A13 will get you to Dagenham pretty reasonably. Brentwood is closer to the M25 so would cut your journey time by 20-30min, if you decided to stay there instead, but public transport to Dagenham would be complex.

Romford is closer still, but driving in fact might not be so easy from there as there will be more urban roads to negotiate. However, it is well set up with chain Hotels like Travel Lodge, and has quite a few small independent Hotels, Guest Houses and B'n'B's that might be worth asking if they will do you a deal for a relatively long stay...

Hello,

A late reply.

Have you considered this place? Can't see it being your base for 2/3 weeks, but, nevertheless, Olympic Stadium construction workers stayed here for months at a time in 2012.

It's a very successful local pub/diner. Large and free car park.

And, yes, we have stayed here after Mitchells and Butlers took it over, but not in the last 12 months.

(It is next to the station tube as the name implies!

3 stops to Dagenham Heathway)

There is also this place, but not used it.

As a former central London and Essex county resident we just consider Chelmsford too far from Dagenham amongst other reasons like EW above.

Regards
