Good hamburgers and things to do in Cleveland.

My parents are visiting from Mexico and my dad loves a good hamburger other than chain restaurants. They are flying in the early afternoon and I don't live near by, so I was thinking to take them to a nice hamburger place and something to see or do since we will be already in Cleveland. Like a nice lake, restaurants by the water, sightseeing Any ideas?

OK -- so it's not a burger, but it's hard not to mention Slyman's deli here for a remarkable sandwich. It's old school Cleveland, too. No frills. But nice servers and a corned beef sandwich nearly the size of a human head.

We have enjoyed B-Spot burgers in suburbia. Haven't had one at the casino. And don't forget Michael Simon's Lolita,, too, for a burger. Greenhouse downtown (we love this place) looks like it churns out a bunch of burgers that people love, too.

Burgers, I think, are as personal as pizza. What may be fantastic to one person (greasy, thick burger with cheddar on sesame bun) may be only OK to someone who likes a gourmet version on brioche. To each his own.

I highly recommend going to Heck's Cafe over in Ohio City. They have some of the best burgers around. Ohio City is located just across the river from Downtown Cleveland on the west side. Ohio City is a great little area in Cleveland.

My wife and I were just there two weeks ago and I got the "Pot Belly" sandwich, which was amazing. Check out the link below:

Heck's just expanded the place and there are more tables in the back now and a larger bar. I love this place and can't say enough good things about it.

Word has it they are going to open another location in Avon, Ohio later this year. Sweet!!!

YMMV but Heck's has really gone downhill in the last few years. I'm glad a PP had a good visit there as the reports I have heard and my own experiences there have been much less than satisfactory.

I think the best burger downtown is at the Little Bar, which is in the alley next to Johnny's downtown. They use leftover cuts of steak from Johnny's, an upscale steak restaurant, and grind those for the burgers, which are generous and delicious. Their other daily sandwich specials are also very good. The place is a hole in the wall, with unassuming service and humble digs, but the food is fantastic. I've referred many people to it over the years.

I would walk or take a cab down to North Coast Harbor and, if Dad is able-bodied, offer to tour the USS Cod submarine (requires being able to climb down into a hatch, but is a really cool old WWII Navy sub, it's $10, and/or the SS Mather Steamship, which is a little more physically accessible. Both are permanently docked at north coast harbor. Of course the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum is right there as well, as is the Great Lakes Science Center. Plenty to do on the north coast, right on the lake.

Pier W in my opinion is the only true CLE lakeside dining. A tad more upscale however I do not think they have burgs.

An extremely short drive from the airport as well as some of the best burgs Ive ever had...is the Buckeye Beer Engine...there hasn't been a variety of burger Ive had there that has not been perfectly cooked as well as perfectly portioned toppings....

Pier W, my favorite restaurant, actually does have burgers on their lunch menu (M-F only) but why would you get meat at restaurant that is known for having the best seafood? :)

Best burger spot? hmm, I actually have no idea! Little Bar sounds interesting.
