Good hamburgers and things to do in Cleveland.

My parents are visiting from Mexico and my dad loves a good hamburger other than chain restaurants. They are flying in the early afternoon and I don't live near by, so I was thinking to take them to a nice hamburger place and something to see or do since we will be already in Cleveland. Like a nice lake, restaurants by the water, sightseeing Any ideas?

A lot of people on here recommend Winking Lizard. I had a really good burger at The Clevelander bar. It's just a little hole in the wall, but the burgers and sandwiches are solid. I can't make specific lakeside dining recommendations, but there's plenty to see and do (and eat). How long will you be in town? What are your interests? Between the many music venues (including home of the Cleveland Orchestra, Severance Hall), West Side Market, the theatre district and Little Italy, you will definitely have enough to keep you busy. I recommend searching this forum for some of TranscendentalEye's past posts. They contain a ton of information.

MIchael Symon's B-Spot serves an excellent burger, but the locations are nothing special (shopping centers http://bspotburgers.com/), as does Dynomite, a take-away only stand right in the Playhouse Square theater district downtown, which might interest your parents (http://dynomitecleveland.com/). Cleveland is not big on lakeside dining, the only real choice being Pier W an upscale restaurant in Lakewood (http://www.selectrestaurants.com/pier/)

Disclaimer: none of these are on the lake... My first thought was Fudruckers, but they are no longer in Cleveland.

Laugh at my next suggestion, but I LOVE their burgers and shakes - Sonic Drive-In. There are several in the area: http://www.sonicdrivein.com/

For an actual sit-down place on the southside, you may want to consider PeppermillPup which has great food: www.the-peppermill.com

Here's a post that will address many of your questions. See the linked "Cleveland Tips" article linked at the beginning of post 2 for "things to do."

Apart from restaurants already mentioned, Shooters is on the Cuyahoga River. Pickle Bill's Lobster House is on the mouth of the Grand River in Grand River, OH. The only restaurant that I know of directly on Lake Erie in Greater Cleveland is the seasonal Sunset Bar & Grille at the Whiskey Island Marina (see the discussion of Edgewater Park in the "Cleveland Tips" article), and it offers a burger, BBQ and lake perch. It has outdoor seating, so don't visit on an inclement day. Pier W overlooks Lake Erie on a bluff, has a nice patio, and offers great views of Lake Erie and of the downtown skyline.

You also could buy take-out at the West Side Market or the West Side Market Cafe, which has good burgers, and take them to nearby Edgewater or Wendy Parks (see the separate discussions for each park under attractions in the "Tips" article) for a picnic on the lake.

Check reviews.

Also, perhaps check out the Lake Erie islands discussion in the following travel article.

See also the discussion in the above travel article of Ohio Amish Country, which may interest your parents.

Enjoy Cleveland.

Swenson's is a classic car hop drive in but they are mostly in Akron and Cleveland suburbs. Edgewater park is a great beach with nice views of the city. Depending on the day you will be here check out the free outdoor concerts on most nights at various sights around town. Wednesday's at Wade Oval and the Transformer Station on W28th. Thursdays at Edgewater. The Art Museum is free and fantastic. Check out the interactive Art Wall. Walk through the Old Arcade.

There I'd a lot more to do. If you give us your time frame and things you like we can make better suggestions.

Also go to an area near downtown called Tremont. There I'd a cool bar there called Prosperity Social Club with a really good burger.

We love the burger at Great Lakes Brewery. Went with some friends from out of town and they LOVED the burger they ordered. They asked the server where they get their meat and told us it comes from Lance's located in the West Side Market which is right across the street. We promptly went to Lance's and bought some to take home. It is delicious. If you decide to go to Great Lakes Brewery definitely visit the West Side Market, a Cleveland landmark.

Unfortunately lakeside dining in Cleveland really doesn't exist. B Spot was recently voted best burger in America, there is one inside the casino

A+ for the burgers

F- for lakeside dining

Friends who tried the casino bspot said is was bad. Nothing like the suburban ones. I personally like Flipside but none are near downtown
