maggies beachside apartments vs one bright point

Looking to stay for 10 nights in September. Family of 4 with children 4 and 8yrs. Would like quietish accomodation, but not far from things. Good beach close by. Have seen both of these apartments available, but has anyone any advice about them. What is the easiest way to get from the airport via ferry? Do we need to hire a car? Budget isn't a problem, so any other accommodation suggestions would be welcome

Hi personally I would go for Maggie Beach House, admittedly 1 Bright Point is newer but it is AT the ferry terminal with no good beach close by, you would have to go to either Picnic Bay (which unfortunately at the moment due to stalled building development si like a ghost town) (I know I live in Picnic), whereas both Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay have good beached especially for children. Travel from airport to ferry terminal, either a taxi which with a family of 4 would be as cheap as the airport bus service, it is only 10/15 minutes to ferry terminal, do not hire a car in Townsville if you intend staying at the island as (1) you usually can't take hire cars from mainland to the island also if you find a company that would allow it the car ferry rates VERY expensive. On the island most of the time you would not need a car but if you wanted one to see the island you can get one for a day or 2 here.

For facilities such as eating etc again Horseshoe Bay has the most , with Bungalow Bay being very reasonable, another place but in Nelly Bay is Man Friday. Hope this has helped you

Gidday carloversmum.

My family (with two kids aged 12 and 10) has just spent 8 days at One Bright Point in a water view 2 bedroom apartment. It was very nice but I wouldn't stay there again because we spent all our time at Horseshoe Bay. That meant driving to and from the place.

We are going back to Magnetic Island in July next year (2011) and we have booked to stay at the Maggies Beachfront Apartments (top floor overlooking Horseshoe Bay). The apartments are right where we want to swim and eat and they look terrific from what I've seen (on-line and 'in the flesh'). You won't need to get a car (or Moke) there as you can arrange pick up (and drop off) at the ferry terminal. However, you might need to use the bus service to and from Nelly Bay if you want to do any food shopping if you stay at Horseshoe Bay.

Another consideration is the fact that the prevailing weather can blow right into Bright Point and this can prevent use of the balcony and the swimming pools.

Hope this helps.

Just to continue...... I would recommend getting the shuttle bus from Townsville airport straight to the ferry terminal. It takes all the hastle out of getting a taxi (shuttle is about $44 return).

Buying food on the mainland might be a bit problematic as you then have to carry it on the ferry and to the apartment. The IGA supermarket at Nelly Bay isn't that expensive and has everything you will want.

There are three bottle shops on the island, one right next to the Maggies Beachfront Apartments - this is good for a holiday :-)

Another plus for staying at Horseshoe Bay is that Maggies Beachfront Apartments are over the road from the beach. This is great for coming and going without having to drive at all. Great also if the kids get ratty and want to go 'home' as you won't have to spoil your time on the beach.

Hope this helps a bit more :-)

Hi there, with respect to the transport from airport to ferry terminal, it would pay you to check time of the ferry due to leave after your arrival, and if you don't have a LOT of time to spare then get a taxi, as if you have a long wait for the ferry there isn't much to do while you wait. Ferry times can be found on the SUN Ferries website.

We have just spent a week at Maggies - unit 10. The patrolled swimming beach is directly across the road from the apartments. The water gets quite low at low tide so if you are flexible with dates check out the tide times. The local Food Works store at Horseshoe Bay is run by very accommodating people and although a small shop the stock is quickly replenished. They bake bread daily and were happy to take an order for us so we didn't miss out. There is a 'fisho' who sells from his home on the main road out of Horseshoe and his barramundi and prawns (frozen) were as good as we've eaten and very reasonably priced. The unit was first class - spacious and nearly brand new and very well equipped. The people who manage the bookings (Best of Magnetic) are very obliging and transfer you from the ferry to the apartment at the time of check in and departure. However, as far as quiet - please be aware currently the local bus service which carries all the day trippers to the island have the bus stop directly outside unit 10 so buses are pulling up, loading and unloading, all day. Apparently, it is to be relocated but it certainly does detract from the peacefulness of an otherwise well located apartment. You also end up with people milling around the bus stop and smokers. We did get used to it and would go inside and shut the doors and put the air con on when the buses were idling for long periods. Just be aware. Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay. Personally, I wouldn't consider Bright Point for a family beach holiday. If budget really isn't an issue there are two fabulous homes at the other, quieter end of Horseshoe Bay listed with Best of Magnetic.

Maggies Beachside apartments seemed pricey and are located in the most touristy part of Maggie - Horeshoe Bay.

I have just come back from 5 nights on Maggie and we stayed at 3 different places:

2 nights Mantra One Brightpoint, Nelly Bay - Waterview room was not as clean as expected of such a pricey room, and was very loud due to the proximity to the Ferry terminal (6am to midnight we heard ferries coming and going). It is close to IGA.

2 nights Magnetic Island Holiday Apartments, Picnic Bay - Super quiet Picnic Bay is almost purely residential. The room was comfortable with all of the expected comforts except a hair dryer. Pool towels were provided which was a nice touch. The Reception was very rarely manned by anyone and at times it was difficult to get the owners attention (when a hair dryer was needed). Quiet and good for families but a fairly dismal location unless you have a car. Value for money was average.

1 night Arcadia Beach Guesthouse (Lovers Bay room), Arcadia - Awesome location, awesome Backpackers/Hostel accomodation. The owners were super friendly and the room was awesome with a KS bed! Also brekky was provided every day. Around the corner is a great supermarket with gourmet items and they make a lovely coffee too. Don't bother eating at Banisters, the service and food was attrocious!

It's worth knowing that Best of Magnetic provide a grocery shopping service. If you want to have your breakfast supplies etc already on hand when you arrive, just tell them in advance when you book. They will also meet you and drop you back to the Ferry. Once you're at Horseshoe Bay, everything you need is there and there is no real need to hire a car. The Barefoot Restaurant is great too and just 2 doors away. Also there are plenty of walks to do from the units along the beach or across the headlands or the Fort. So you couldn't get a better location for a real holiday than Maggies Beachfront.
