grand oasis riviera maya travel tips? |
|
Will be going to GORM in May 07. Am not familiar with the area & have a few questions. First, What's the most sensible arrangement for transportation to & from the airport? Second, Are the mosquitoes a big problem? Third, Where's the nearest Walmart? And Fourth, is traveling on the collectivos, and "walking about" in this area a safe practice for 'tourists"? Appreciate any feedback! |

Went to the GORM from Jan 19 - 26, 2007 - LOVED IT!!! I went with my mother in law and as two females alone we felt perfectly safe the entire time we were there. As part of our package we we driven by tour bus to the resort. That worked out very well as it is quite a drive to the resort so I am not sure what a cab would cost. We read reviews that mentioned bugs but we saw NONE including no mosquitos at all. I believe there is a Wal-Mart in Playa Del Carmen which is about a 25 minute ride away (towards Cancun) - I heard there was one and I did see a Sams Club. We took the collectivo into Playa - only $ 2 each versus about $30 in a cab. It was fine! Just remember where they drop you off (Playa Del Carmen was the last stop) and go back to that spot to go back to the hotel. You have to be sure to speak up and remeind them where to let you off when going back to the hotel so pay attention to landmarks when you get on the bus. We also one day walked out to the road and over along a dirt path to the next resort over (The Grand Bahai) and went to a market that they have there. There are "hotel run" stores but also a "real" local market where you can barter etc. Felt very safe on that walk as well - it was maybe 10-15 minute away. There is also a 24hour doctor there in that market if it was needed (you do need cash to see the doctor) and there is also an ATM machine there as well. Wish I was going back ! Had an awesome vacation - ENJOY!! | ||||||
