I am going to the Bahia Principe Akumal for the first time next week. I will tell you what I know about the location. It depends on what you want in a vacation. If you want the Cancun or Playa del Carmen nightlife and party atomsphere, go there. If you want to go to Xel-ha, (10 minutes south), Tulum ruins, (20 minutes south) and love to snorkle and see jungle and lots of sea life and beautiful surroundings go to the Bahia Principe. I opt for the later.

Akumal Beach Resort (ABR) is a smaller resort located about 3 km north of the Gran Bahia Principe complex, right on Akumal bay. I have not stayed there but have read that is not as "fancy" as GBP, but the rooms are neat & clean.

My sister stayed there every year for the past 6 years. She and her husband love this resort. This is what she says about it: It is not fancy, very laid back, beautiful beach. She liked that the rest. was on the beach. They have hammocks, good drinks...not premium liquor. Staff very friendly. A lot of return customers...........it has a faithful following. Some rooms have been re-done.....the others are a little tired looking. Food good. She said deserts are awesome. She loves this resort. Hope this helps.

The Akumal Beach Resort, has a great beachfront locations,and you can snorkel right off the beach. It is a smaller hotel rated 3.5 stars only. I have stayed there and loved it, but it is a moderate property, not deluxe in any way. What I loved: The beach bar with swings, the open air palapa lobby with comfy sitting areas, the palapa roofed main buffet restaurant on the beach with good food and serve yourself wine, the theatre (indoor) with great shows, the beach for swimming, the activities staff.

Just out of curiosity where did you end up going back in 2004?

we ended up doing holguin for new years and then in Jan we went to a wedding in puerto plata. We found out about the wedding after we booked new years but going for new years was cheaper then going to ABR in JAN!
