Waynesville is a small town that has numerous festivals and goings-on at various times of the year. Waynesville has good dining choices and shopping for basics/needs and other good shops such as the Mast General Store and several mountain decor venues. Several good dining venues including the Frog Leap Public House among others.

Waynesville and Murphy are the two larger communities along hwy 74 as it travels into Asheville or into Tennessee a few miles past Murphy.

Waynesville is sort of a gateway community into many small towns and villages as well as the Greater GSMNP area on the Carolina side. The Blue Ridge Parkway is all around the area.

It serves as a good base camp for a visit to the area or a day trip in to town for dining, shopping or supplies.

Apple farms around during fall season. Overall a good place to visit or stay.

If you are looking for tourist games and rides etc via Pigeon Forge, then this is not a good choice.

Sorry, the time to PF is about 2 hours depending on your route and the season.

We love Waynesville and Maggie Valley, and enjoy spending time on Waynesville's historic Main St. Lots of coffee shops, art galleries, Mast General Store, restaurants, etc.

Via I-40, Pigeon Forge is typically 1.25 - 1.50 hours, traffic permitting.

Have a great trip!

The entrance to Cataloochee, Cove Creek Rd., is just off of I-40, so it's just a matter of mileage and traffic from Asheville to there, about 35 miles. Note that the trip from Cove Creek Rd. to Cataloochee is at least an additional 15 - 20 minutes, again depending on traffic and road conditions.

Regarding things to do in Waynesville NC which is just a few miles from Asheville NC---Wow! Thanks for all the response. We just returned from a wonderful tour of the Cataloochee Valley with Esther Blakely of Cataloochee tours. We saw herds of elk complete with the bucks calling to the does and rutting and trying to get the does interested in them. What a beautiful valley and what a happy, charming guide Esther was.

Glad you enjoyed your trip! I've never done a Cataloochee tour, I've always just driven up at daylight. It's pretty cool to hear the bugling and watch the bucks "wrestle" each other with those huge racks.
