I love both towns, so it's a tough call for me. Waynesville is larger than Bryson City, and so it has stores like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. It also has many restaurants to choose from. It's a neighbor to Maggie Valley, so I spend a lot of time in Waynesville, especially on the historic Main St. section.
Bryson City is the more quaint of the two. It has the small town feel I look forward to when I vacation, much like Dillsboro. It's also home to the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad.
When you say you're trying to find a home base, what sort of excursions are you planning to take? Waynesville is much closer to Maggie Valley and the elk of Cataloochee, Asheville and the waterfalls of the Brevard area, but Bryson City is closer to Cherokee and the entrance to the Park.
I see why it's hard to choose.
Thanks
Looking for a base to go into Smokies for a few days for day hikes. If Brson City is quainter and has enough restaurants it sounds like the better of the two

Waynesville is much more proximate to Asheville which could be a default excursion if the weather is bad-much better than video poker in Cherokee anyway. Bryson City is fine, although quaint might be a stretch. If you are looking at outdoor activities and the Park, that might be the better choice, but if you value arts, restaurants, etc. I would choose Waynesville
Thanks !
