New Topsail Island bridge for Surf City

The NC Department of Transportation has chosen the location and design of a new bridge to replace the swing bridge in Surf City.

The new bridge will be 65 feet at its highest point above the water and be a fixed bridge instead of a movable one. It will begin at the intersection of Roland Avenue with Little Kinston Road and Atkinson Point, continue south and cross the Intracoastal Waterway about 1,000 feet south of where the current swing bridge is located. The new bridge will cross the Intracoastal Waterway, curve to the south and then back north.

Whether you love or hate the swing bridge, its days are numbered.

If you want to get some photos of it, don't worry, you have time. Construction isn't scheduled until 2017.
