Hiking in early December

My husband and I are going to a wedding in Highlands in the first week of December. We were thinking about adding a few days so that we could hike in the region, but we aren't sure about the weather at that time of year. Hiking with temperatures in the 30s and 40s is fine, but we probably wouldn't want to hike in deep snow. Wondering if anyone can provide some guidance on whether hiking is typically OK that time of year or not- we know that with the weather there are no guarantees!

We hike in the mountains of NC and SW VA all year round. If the conditions at higher elevations are too snowy, trails at lower elevations (lower than Highlands, for example) are generally clear. There are wonderful views in the winter in the mountains - bare trees and very little haze. For some ideas, you can check out

It would be really unusual to have deep snow in December....have lived in this area for 18 years and we hike all year long! IF we get snow it tends to just be dustings.
