Uptown area

Visiting North Carolina in September and will be staying in the Uptown area, I need some helpful hints on what to do. Would like to know about area museums, sites, shopping and great restaurants and live music venues. Help.

There are several excellent museums- Gantt, Mint, Bechtler (all art museums), Levine Museum of the New South (history), Discovery Place (hands on science) and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The EpiCenter has restaurants, movies and bowling and I think some clubs. There are lots of other restaurants uptown, too. Not in uptown, but about 15-20 min. drive is the Billy Graham Center, if that interests you. And there is Latta Plantation and the Hezikiah Alexander Home (American Revolution era stuff). Oh- and north of uptown is the Raptor Center if you are 'into' birds of prey. And for fun there is the Whitewater Center (rafting, ziplines, kyaking, etc.) on the westside of town towards the Gaston county line. And there are 2 lakes- Lake Norman north of the city and Lake Wylie south and west. Carowinds is not far if you are into amusement parks. If you have a car and are willing to drive, threre is a great unique restaurant in Gastonia (about a 25 min. drive from uptown) called Rodi. It is a Mediterranian-American grill. They often have live music on Thursdays, Fridays or Saturdays. It is in a converted historic high school gym- but inside you feel like you are in Tuscany. There are also LOTS of local artists who display their work there.

There is so much to do in uptown. I can fill your day up right here.

1. Take the LYNX light rail to the East/West Blvd station and have breakfast at the Pewter Rose.

2. Hop back on the LYNX toward town and hop off on 7th Street station and head for the Levine Museum of the New South. There you will enjoy Charlotte, past, present, and future.

3. Head to the EpiCentre on East Trade. You can shop at Revolution, Belle Ville, and a few other shops there.

4. While in the EpiCentre grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants. I prefer a burger joint called Five Guys, but there are about 15 places to eat there.

5. After you had your fill walk it off a little by walking down S. Tryon and go to the Mint Museum Uptown or Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, or both. (Admission is $10 each) If you enjoy art, then you will certainly enjoy both of those places.

6. If you find yourself hungry, jump across the street and grab a bite at Matt's Chicago Dogs and enjoy your dog on The Green which is a park right next to the restaurant.

7. Now, we are at a cross roads. If you want live music, head over (drive or take a CATS bus) to the Double Door Inn on Charlottetowne Ave across from CPCC. There is live music all of the time there. Or, if you are in the mood for some theater check the schedule at McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square:

www.blumenthalarts.org/default.asp…

There you will find theater with admission prices of 15-20 bucks.

So, there you have it, a day filled with things to do in Charlotte. There are also a number of festivals, concerts, plays, etc, that take place throughout the year. Check these sites for more info.

If you have time, I highly suggest relaxing at Marshall Park on 3rd and McDowell. Grab a snack and enjoy the view of Charlotte's rapidly growing skyline.

Hope this helps, and I most certainly hope that you enjoy your stay in the Queen City.

I forgot to mention Latta Arcade on South Tryon between 3rd St and E. MLK Blvd. There is no dedicated website for it, but it's a collection of restaurants and shops in I guess what you would call a tiny mall. If you have time checkout it out.
