Recommendations for Kids

Hello,

We're just starting to look into Charlotte for a trip in June or July. We'll have 4 mom's with 7 kids meeting up (ages 5-9 yrs old). We plan to spend 3 full days in the area.

Two mom's are driving, and two mom's are flying. Any recommendations on hotels? Anything close to activities or with shuttle transportation. More importantly, any hotels with waterparks of any size?

We'll be doing all kid friendly activities, so any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

I think there's a Great Wolf Lodge in Charlotte and Carowinds has a water park. Discovery Place is also another great place to take kids.

Plaza Fiest is always fun - could combine with Carowinds; some hotels there or Rock Hill, but read the reviews.

Metalmorphosis is fascinating to kids: several videos:

Free - small donations: http://www.nchistoricsites.org/polk/polk.htm

Andrew Jackson - very small museum & great park with picnic area near a lake, easy hikes...

Botanical Gardens at the University or http://www.dsbg.org/

see reviews.

Latta Plantation. and Carolina Raptor Centre: http://www.carolinaraptorcenter.org/

Also see Free & almost free - quite a few great suggestions. (right-hand side)

Hotels: apart from the above, BW Sterling has a shuttle, also close to Lynx train - easy to get to City Centre; check TA. Best rate: call the Manager & ask for Manager's Special Rate..

Downtown Hotels - checkHoliday Inn or Omni

Ballantyne: Staybridge, but need a car.

Lake Norman Hotels - lake is nice, but need a car...

Not sure if coming around 4th July; hotels in the city centre will get quite full and will not discount!!

Check the Hampton uptown- has free breakfast and is near Lynx line and has free shuttle for uptown (within 3 miles of hotel) plus a small pool and workout room. Also, it is across the street from the NASCAR Hall of Fame(sometimes they have ticket deals with the Hampton or the Hilton Garden Inn uptown). Lots of good museums uptown- plus Discovery Place and Spirit Square. There's also the Whitewater center- about a ten or fifteen min. drive from uptown. Carowinds (ask if the Hampton has a ticket package- sometimes they do) is about a 30--35 min. drive away. IMAGION is the kid's section of the uptown public library and is a destination in itself. I'd also check to see what is on at the Belk Theatre complex and Spirit Square while you are here. Epicenter is a short walk (or shuttle ride) from the Hampton and has bowling, movie theatres, restaurants, etc. Concord Mills Mall has a racing theme- about 20-30 min. from uptown. Northlake mall- small but ok for shopping- about 20 min. away, Carolina Place mall- larger but older- about 30 min. away- but on the way to/from Carowinds. In addition to the Botanical Gardens at UNCC, there's also Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont- about 20 min. away and not too far from the Whitewater center.
