Charlotte for Business / Leisure - Uptown vs SouthPark

My husband is traveling to Charlotte for a long weekend - Wed., June 24 through Mon., June 29 for business. He is possibly being relocated there for work. I am traveling with him so that I can get a feel for the city. There is something huge going on in town that weekend as all of the main hotels in the Uptown area were booked up over six weeks ago. We were left with just a few to choose from - The Doubletree and the Hilton Garden Inn. We are currently booked to stay at the Hilton Garden Inn, but I just noticed that they do not have an outdoor pool. I am going to have a lot of down time on my own, and being from MN, was hoping to take advantage of some sun time! I see that the Doubletree (Gateway Village) has availability and an outdoor pool.

I am wondering if it would be better to stay at the Doubletree Gateway Village or if we should consider staying in the South Park area? South Park has availability at both the Marriot and Double Tree. Does anyone have any suggestions? My husband will need to travel to Uptown for work during rush hour at least 3 times during our stay. We are in our lower 30s and enjoy going out for both nice dinners and the local party scene. We are not too concerned about the cost of the hotel as it is paid for by our company. I think the Omni would have been an ideal hotel for us but that was booked up a long time ago. So I am just looking for help on a neighborhood to stay in that will be both convenient for my husband to get to work and for us to take advantage of the city's nightlife - be it by car or cab. Thanks!

A quick look on expedia shows that the Hilton Garden Inn Uptown and the Holiday Inn Center City are both open on your dates, either would be a good choice. And as someone who used to commute from Southpark to Uptown during rush hour, I don't recommend it. But if you do decide to stay in southpark, my family always stays at the Marriott when they are in town and they enjoy it.

We have stayed in the Holiday Inn Center City and really enjoyed it. The have a terrace type (roof top) pool area and the location can't be beat. You can walk to many restaurants/bars from the hotel...it's very central to the 'uptown' scene. =)

When I initially heard you both say Holiday Inn, I kind of thought to myself that that was not what we are looking for. I just checked it out though and it is not your typical Holiday Inn! I think we are going to try to book that. It sounds like it is in a perfect location for us AND it has a rooftop pool which will give me somewhere to relax during the day while my husband is at work. Now ... we just need to hold off the rain! Thanks so much for your input!

We always stay at the Hampton Inn Southpark. The NICEST Hampton ever. Really nice.

That is a great area for down time. The hotel is in Phillips Place, a boutique type shopping area. 1 block away and across the street is Southpark Shopping Center. I know MSP well, and there is not a mall like this one there. Fabulous, with anything you would want. Great restaurants in the area.

Wonderful area to be in!! Check our Hampton Inn Southpark
