4 Day Vacation - suggestions to make it fun

My wife and I are going to a conference in Charlotte in Mid June, and we are wondering what all there is to do. We will be staying at the Omni downtown - and are young, have no problem walking places and would be willing to rent a car if needed.

From what I have read, the city is not a "vacation hotspot", but we want to make the most of it. What is the nearest/best beach/drive time? We are not interested in clubs/bars, but are interested in any nice restaurants that stand out (she has a generous per diem that we intend to use). Any must sees? I apprecitate any help.

A few ideas for you in the downtown area:

- Check the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's web site to see if anything is going on during your stay

- Mint Museum of Craft and Design

- Museum of the New South

- Basketball game in the arena

- Food ideas include Blue (excellent food with jazz), LaVechia's for seafood, Mert's Heart and Soul, Sonoma, Zinc, RiRa (Irish Pub)

Other ideas:

- South Park area is great for shopping, Rooster's retaurant and Village Tavern are good food choices in that area

- Rent a car and drive up I77 to the Yadkin Valley wineries (Shelton has a beautiful winery and excellent restaurant, Rag Apple Lassie, etc) or the Swan Creek area (Raffelldini has a great patio with beautiful scenery, Laurel Gray and Buck Shoals), again north on I77 to Hwy 421. Look at NC wine Trail web site for any special events. Many of the wineries hold concerts in the evenings.

- If you are a Nascar fan, there are several team garages and the Lowe's Motor Speedway, along with Concord Mills Mall, abuot 30 minutes away.

- The NC Zoo in Ashboro (1 1//2 hours) is one of the best in the country and Childress Winery is on the way

Beaches are much further away. Charleston, SC area beaches such as Folly Beach are about 3 - 3 1/2 hours away. Charleston is worth spending a weekend if you have time! Other beaches are about 4-5 hours away.

In the mountains, Asheville is 2 1/2 hour drive and a fun, funky small city. Blowing Rock is a small moutain town about 1 45 drive time. The Blue Ridge Parkway goes by each of these areas.

You'll be centrally located, and many good restaurants can be found around the hotel on Tryon St. and on College St. Epicenter, across College St. from the Omni, has a bowling alley, movie theater, and a wide assortment of dining options.

I would recommend taking the light rail to historic Southend. There are some unique dining options there including Phat Burrito, Price's Chicken Coop, and Greek Isles between Bland St. station and East/West Blvd. station. Your hotel is a block from the Transportation Center/Area station on Trade St.

If you don't mind walking, you may want to check out 4th ward, where historic homes are located around 4th ward park.

It is about 4 hours from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach, which is perhaps the most "touristy" of the beaches, and about 5 hours to Wilmington - a historic & quirky coastal city.

If you are into outdoor adventures, US National Whitewater Center has a lot to offer. Raffaldini Vineyards in Yadkin is nice (and some award winning wine as well). Hendersonville/Asheville is just over 2 hours away...beaches are 4 hours.

Wow- thanks for all the replies. I think we will defintely try to make it to the wineries. I didn't realize the beach was that far away - I think that might be a bit to long for a day trip - I think a 2-3 hour drive would be the max for us. Charelston sounds great - but still a lengthy drive. Thanks for all the help so far.
