Any area "around town" is bad.But there are few hotels in those neighborhoods anyway. If you need to be uptown, book where the business people stay - stay IN town at Hilton or Weston or Marriott or for more cost conscious- Hampton Inn, Residence Inn, Hilton Garden. Best wishes.
I agree with bud. If not downtown, maybe try Pineville or the Huntersville area.
I live "downtown" (or "Uptown" as it's called) and find it completely safe. Hotels in the area that are worth staying at and in secure areas (police always out at night): Omni, Marriott Center City, Courtyard Marriott -- all on Trade or Tryon Streets.
I would caution about using the words "completely safe". No place in our area is completely safe. Always use vigilance and common sense. Crime is everywhere. Best wishes.
*When using common sense, Uptown is completely safe.* I would feel more safe staying at the uptown Marriott or Omni vs. a random Quality or Hampton Inn off the Interstate.
I have personally stayed in the Holiday Inn Uptown and the Marriott too, and both have been great. During those stays we mainly walked everywhere, to restaurants, sporting events, etc, and have been fine. Just, as previous posters stated, use common sense and your 'city' eyes and ears... =)
There's a new hotel, Aloft (a line off the the W chain I believe) in the Epicentre. Typically their rates are pretty good. I work Uptown, and live "in town" and I've never had a problem. More and more people are coming out Uptown, and I think it's fantastic! There's plenty of dining and other things to do.
Any area of any place in any city is not completely safe; of course it's wise to use common sense, but I'll stress again I've never had a problem, and I've lived in Charlotte for six years, and half of that time I've lived in East Charlotte.
Happy Visiting! Feel free to PM me if you need restaurant tips. :)
