What hotels are near the new Ikea? What section of town is it in?
The new Ikea is located in the University area, off of Hwy 29 near the intersection of WT Harris Blvd and I-85. Hotels in around that intersection include the Hilton Charlotte University Place, Drury Inn, Hampton Inn Charlotte-University Place, Residence Inn Charlotte University Research Park, Courtyard Marriott Charlotte University Research Park, Sleep Inn University Place, and Holiday Inn - Charlotte University.
....or you could head up near Concord Mills and the Speedway. Several nice, clean ones there as well...including Embassy Suites Resort. 10-15 minutes to Ikea.
OK, guess I'm pretty clueless, but what is IKEA?? And what's the bid deal about it?? I have heard a lot of people are very excited. =)
dmw444,
Ikea is a giant (and I mean giant) home goods store. You can buy anything from patio furniture to shower rings to kitchen cabinets there. I personally have never made it in and out of one in fewer than four hours, even if I think I’m going for just one thing. www.ikea.com

I remember being so excited when IKEA opened up in Atlanta a couple of years ago... went once and now I'm scarred for life ;-) If the idea of huge crowds, traffic jams, screaming kids and loud, bad music appeals to you, then by all means go ahead.
I would much rather buy something out of their catalog than ever step foot in that store again.
Thanks! I just ordered a catalog to see what they had to offer! =)
The Ikea will officially open Feb. 18th and it is larger than the one in Atlanta. As part of a promotion, Ikea is setting up a fully furnished room in uptown at Trade and Tryon that will be open to the public Feb. 12th and 13th from 10AM to 6PM. They will then donate all the furniture to charity.
Went to IKEA over the weekend. It was definitely crazy busy, but well worth the trip! Lots of good stuff at even better prices. Wear comfortable clothes and make sure to get a shopping cart, unlike us, who just got the bag and were struggling to get all our stuff to checkout. =)
