Has anybody stayed at the Watershed Cabins in or around Bryson City? The cabin I am most interested in is Hawk's Ridge Hideaway. If so, can you tell me what you liked and disliked.
Not sure if October Sky is still available but that would be perfect-it certainly wowed us!!
I stayed in Cabin In The Clouds in March '12. We absolutely loved it!!!The gentleman that we made the reservation through was very helpful and it was one of the easiest check ins we have been through. It was very private, very relaxing, and very romantic. We spent 2 days enjoying the solitude, reading and enjoying wine by the outdoor fireplace. I will try and run through the Pros and Cons:
Very convenient to the local Ingles, only 10 minutes away.
Secluded setting, sat outside in hot tub and enjoyed the stars, not a street light around to diminish our view.
Beautiful interior, leather couches, the mattress was heavenly in the king bedroom. We liked it so much we made note of the brand!
Outdoor fireplace with plenty of wood.
Nice large grill for cooking
Kitchen was well stocked and we had complimentary coffee and some condiments, and salt and pepper which was very nice.
Shampoo. conditioner and soap which was nice touch
Plenty of towels.......
Washer and Dryer with 2 boxes of detergent! Loved those little "extras"
Well water that was sooooo good
Hiking trails very close to cabin
Hardly any... but need to list
No WIFI without extra small fee which we wouldn't have minded but I just tend to "expect" it now where ever we go.
The TV was too small. Absolutely need a big screen for the living area. The cabin is too nice and upscale for a tv like that and really a flat screen is not that expensive now..
Blow Dryer!!! I just expected it...
Parking not adequate for more than 1 car
We loved it so much that we bought another weekend stay that we will use soon. We took a walk and looked at several of the other cabins which were also very nice. We live in Knoxville TN which is so much closer to Gatlinburg, but we will take the extra time to drive here again and again. It was not touristy at all, just a very nice place overall..
"Cabin in the Clouds" is certainly a beautiful cabin and I think Carmen wrote a very accurate, thoughtful, and helpful review. I have grown to expect nothing less from TripAdvisor users, as this forum is awesome! Since we have over 65 cabins and each one is unique, I do want to provide some clarity and explanation that other users might find helpful:
WIFI - every single one of our cabins that qualifies for DSL (not an easy feat in the mountains and rural areas) has that service and it is free with your rental. In 2012 the cellular service in our area finally caught up with the rest of the world, and we now have fairly widespread 3G coverage that allows us to provide portable HotSpot devices to our guests. These are not really affordable for most cabin owners to provide with their cabins (most of our owners do need to treat their cabins as investments, and therefore need to control operating costs). Also, these devices are subject to high overage charges for heavy bandwidth usage, so there is exposure to us as the rental company for providing them. Thus, we do charge a small setup fee to guests using these HotSpots until such time that they are as affordable as other internet options. Our website explains on each cabin whether it has internet from DSL (which is free with your rental) or whether it is optional with a HotSpot (which has a small one-time setup fee)
TV size - I will pass this along to the cabin owner and let him consider if he wants to invest in new TVs. Our website has a nice filtering option, and "big-screen TV" is one of the features you can specifically filter for if you need it.
Hair Dryers - we try to supply the basic conveniences that we think every group will enjoy. We will consider blow dryers, but for now will continue to list (as we always have) this item on the "remember to bring" list that each guest is provided with their driving directions. Goodness knows, Watershed tries to be the company that goes "over and above" expectations... as exhibited by these things that other local rental companies don't provide: free firewood, free propane for grill, free laundry detergent, no requirement to haul your own trash and no fee if you leave dirty dishes in the sink, and a lot more
Parking - I will consider picturing something showing the parking area on the website as I looked to see what the parking area looked like and couldn't find it. It struck me as odd that the comment was "parking not adequate" but I couldn't remember the exact size and layout of the parking at this cabin. I do remember driving up and parking at this cabin to meet the guests to show them some potential cabins to buy, and I parked right there in addition to their SUV. It is a private, circle-drive that is long enough to park 4 or 5 cars, I am sure, although the ones boxed in couldn't get out without moving one of the end cars. What I don't remember is if there is an area that is wider and would allow side-by-side parking.
Thanks, Carmen and others, for thoughtful posts. It makes vacation travel better for everyone when we can form reasonable expectations about where we stay and what we are getting for our leisure travel dollars.
We just returned from a 2 night stay at "Tufo's Glory." Absolutely, hands down, the best mountain/cabin rental ever. Furniture was great, beautiful kitchen, comfy beds, nice shower and the most amazing view of the sunsets ever. You are ABOVE the "smokey" part of the Smokey Mountains ! Definitely was a challenge to get to i.e. do NOT attempt to find it at night in the dark but it was worth every penny! Feel free to message me with any questions. The hot tub was also great but the website was very clear that the hot tub was not *on* the deck so we were not disappointed in any way.
I am considering renting Time Flies, but I have rarely driven up (or down) very steep mountains (Hills, but not Mountains). I have a Honda Accord. Although I am a cautious driver, I am seeking feedback on whether I need to rent a 4WD vehicle or whether the Honda Accord will make it to Time Flies. I plan to rent in the summer so I am not worried about snow or ice. I rented a cabin in Asheville this past Fall, but it was not up a steep mountain road, I would describe it more as a hill.
One other question, the website states that there is a walking trail that is accessible by Time Flies. What type of trail is it and how far is the trail from the cabin?
As an aside, I really appreciate the owner providing input in the blog. Some of the comments are just plain humerous. Bugs, tree frogs, and other sounds and sights of nature are why we all go to the mountains!
I just wanted to post a quick note about how much I love the Watershed Cabins. Just got back from my third cabin renal in two years. I love the cabins, ammenities, and views. I did have a problem with the hot tub at this last rental and they moved me to a new cabin which was a huge upgrade over the one I had booked. I really appreciate the customer service I received. My friends and I have made this a yearly trip. Can't wait untill next year.
I have stayed at Watershed Cabins alot when I have gone to Bryson City.
Riverside, King Fisher, Acorn Bend, Moonstruck, Wren's Nest, and Watershed 9. Never have I had any problems. I ran out of firewood but they had some delivered shortly after I called.
I love Watershed Cabins and had recommended them to my co-workers whom have stayed at Watershed and invited others to the cabins.
You may pay more but it is worth it. You do not have to carry your trash to the trash dump, nor do you have to buy your own firewood.
We love Watershed and Tim has the nicest cabins in Bryson City.
Sorry to say Tim, I can upload a copy, blow dryers were not on our remember list. I just got home from Watershed with my family. To remind you of who we are, we are the family that was contacted on our drive to N.C. That our cabin (Fontana 2) had burst water pipes. We were to be moved to another cabin that we can only stay in for one night, only to have to move to another. We took a ride to the cabin we rented only to find beds outside, ( it was snowing ). We were lied to and still don't know the truth! We own our own business and learned along time ago, tell the truth (Tim ) ! Your always better off, people respect you and can handle what ever it is if your honest! Thankful it's not the cabin or place that makes your memories it is the people your with, had a great time in spit of the inconvience. No we won't be back and when asked we will not recommend . If anyone has questions or wants the pics of the beds outside I can send them .
To the Owner:
I would like to say thank you for your detailed reply regarding the hot tub issue and other "complaints." I just booked a stay today for June and feel very confident in my choice of cabins. We plan to stay at Wren's Nest in June and I'm very much looking forward to our stay. Thank you again for your candidness!
Our Watershed Cabin was amazingly gorgeous and we had absolutely no problems other than a glitch finding the place. It was WAY on top of a mountain so it was a bit tricky. You should be confident in your rental. I feel badly for the renter above but it sounds like just lousy luck. Pipes burst and last minute arrangements in situations like that are not always smooth.
