Not sure what you mean by authentic...I guess on Long Island that might be a diner ;-).

Where are you staying? Will you have a car? Budget?

Here is a link to the golfcourse. Not sure when they open, but it might be hard to get a tee time.

Staying in westbury, have a car and budget is open. May be the only time ever on Long Island so while my wife has some business, we still want to have a vacation. Looking to eat away from the chains and when possible, organic or fresh from the farm. We would be interested in some memorable meals from Long Island and with our son who is 9 along, anything you would recommend to first time visitors to this area. Bethpage Black is on my list but not necessarily the family's list.

Hmmm--organic, fresh from the farm, memorable meals near or around Westbury...that might be a tall order. Westbury is in the heart of Nassau County--which is a sprawling suburban county of around 1.4 million people.

Since you will be here in June, the weather should be nice. We like to eat in Port Washington, Rockville Centre, and Long Beach. While all three have lots of yummy options to choose from, I am not sure of a place that has that organic/fresh from the farm thing going on—but lots of places use organic ingredients. Port Washington and Rockville Centre both have the downtown village thing—with Rockville Centre having a greater range in a smaller area. Long Beach is a beach town that was heavily damaged in Hurricane Sandy, but many of the restaurants are up and running again—or will be by summer. And they recently announced that for the first time the City of Long Beach is going to let the restaurants set up food/street carts to increase business—so that could be fun. In Long Beach, we really like Cuban Crocodile.

Not too far from Westbury is Hicksville. Hicksville has a large Indian population and there are some great Indian restaurants in the area: House of Dosas, Raj Mahal, Diwan. Westbury also has some great Colombian restaurants: Pollos El Paisa.

For a high-end dining experience, try Rothmann’s Steak House in East Norwich. http://www.rothmannssteakhouse.com/

The other option is you can go into the city or further east on Long Island. If you go into Suffolk County (just east of Nassau County), both Babylon and Huntington have many great dining options.

Almost forgot--things to do for fun!

Nassau County is an easy train ride into the city. Ask your hotel which station you should use--take the LIRR to Penn Station. http://new.mta.info/

Also, we have beaches. Jones Beach is the biggest in Nassau County--and a short drive from Westbury. Many of our boardwalks were damanged or destroyed in Hurricane Sandy last fall, but things should be mostly up and running by summer (except for Long Beach's boardwalk--it has to be completely rebuilt.)

You could take a sailing lesson at the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay. It is REALLY fun: http://thewaterfrontcenter.org/

Since you have a 9-year-old, the Bayville Adventure Park might be fun: http://www.bayvilleadventurepark.com/

If the weather is bad, check out the Cradle of Aviation Museum or the Long Island Children's Museum:
