Query on Hotel, Boarding, Activities in Mauritius

Hi All,

We are a group of 2 families consisting of 2 adults + 2 kids in each family.

One family consists of a 14 yr and 1 yr old and the other family has got a 6 yr and 3 yr old kid.

This is our first trip to Mauritius and we are travelling to Mauritius from 3 July - 9 July. I would like to know the following:

1. Which is a good quality hotel to stay in with a beach/ocean facing view considering the dates we are travelling.

2. Which Plan should i go for? Should i go for All Inclusive, Full Board, Half Board Plan. We prefer Indian/Chinese/Lebanese type of cuisine but are open towards any other cuisine.

3. Since its a holiday we plan to sip cocktails whole day long.at least that's the plan :) Which hotel would provide an All Inclusive by which i means all food and alcoholic drinks would be free

4. Since we are at the beach we would like to take part in water sports etc. Would any Hotel/Plan provide this for free?

5. Since we have 4 kids, would any Plan/Hotel provide kiddo activities for free

6. We are very much interested in learning scuba diving if not too expensive. Any ideas on cost?

7. Would hotels provide free transportation from airport to hotel and back

8. If withing TA rules, can you recommend any known cab driver who would not rip us on transportation if sightseeing

9. Any must do events/sightseeing in Mauritius

10. One of the kids would just be 3 yr 3 months when we go to Mauritius. Would the hotels charge this kid too or is it open for negotiation? We intend to take just 2 rooms for the 2 families. So both kids would be sleeping in with the parents.

11. Although we know it might be expensive we intend to stay for just one day in one of the those beautiful villas/rooms which is on the water on stilts. Any recommendation for a not so expensive type of such villa/room.

12. Any other hidden terms/conditions regarding hotel/boarding we need to be aware of.

Sorry for having so many queries but i wanted to cover as much base as possible.

I cannot answer all queries but here goes.

I would look to be in the north west of Mauritius. Look at hotels such as Le Victoria, Maritim, Vernada Pointe aux Biches, le Mauricia.

They all do AI but will have some exclusions such as branded alcoholic drinks. The Shandrani is regarded as having the best AI but its in the south east and the south and east does not have better weather at that time of the year.

If you plan to be hotel based then AI makes sense.

All the above hotels would provide free non mechanised water-sports. Some may offer free introductory water skiing and they should also be introductory diving and at least a rep from a dive centre making regular visits to the hotel.

For things to do, take a look at our FAQs on activities. I would talk to several taxi drivers at your hotel and barter a rate. Most of them will have menu of popular trips and prices. Also go to Grand Baie and visit tour excursion shops for tours, prices and ideas. There are so many that bartering should be very easy for things like catamaran trips.

Good advice from PrestonTraveller above.

I suggest you also find a hotel with plenty of activities for the children and avoid those who specialise in honeymoons/couples type holidays. At the risk of sounding like the tourist police, as a cautionary note I would add that sipping cocktails all day and taking part in water sports do not go together, I assume you meant not on the same day.

The good news when it comes to the free water skiing and diving initiation that it tends to take place about 9/10 am just after breakfast so I doubt you have supped many cocktails by then!

Hi Folks,

After lot of searching and seeing our budget we have sort of zeroed in the Preybere Hotel and Apts. They have offered us a good deal. Most of the reviews from visitors seem very positive.

Could some of the experts pls comment on the below:

1. How do you rate the hotel in terms of service/food, etc

2.. How is the beach there. heard its just 5 minutes across the street and is supposed to be one of the best in Mauritius or is it the best only on that island. If its a public beach will it be crowded always.

3. Are tourist destinations near or far from this hotel

Thanks in Advance

Hi Ross,

I looked around the place a year ago for a friend and quite liked it.

Location wise its good - on the bus route and bang in the centre of Pereybere with its shops and cafes and Winners supermarket etc.

You can be in Grand Baie within 10 minutes by bus and other beaches like Trou aux Biches within 25 mins.

The beach is small - when we say its good its very good for swimming which is why its so popular with residents and tourists. Its more like two minutes across the road.

All beaches in Mauritius are public.

You can rent sunloungers and sunshades and you can walk along the beach away from the main drag.

It is busy but its a nice little beach.

There are some reviews on the beach on here.

Thanks Bronia. One small query.

When u say all beaches are public, does it mean i can enter any beach even those that 5 star hotels advertise?

Cheers

Yes - you can but you can't use their sun loungers :)

If you want to enter the hotel grounds though you need to ask the hotel security.
