Driving from Cleveland to Rochester, shall we plan on stopping in Buffalo for beef on weck, or is it available in Rochester as well?
I do not believe this is a Rochester specialty.
You can't get it everywhere, but a lot of places do have it in and around Rochester. Where in Rochester will you be staying?
We have a room at Dartmouth House.
I've lived in Rochester all my long life, and I've never had a good beef on weck here! Get anywhere near Buffalo, however...it's a totally different story! I would definitely stop in that area. (I actually think that the best one I ever had was in a little diner in Lockport. Second best... in Clarence. Funny, huh?)
Schwabl's in West Seneca is where I've had beef on weck a couple times on our way to Canada. I guess we should plan on stopping there on our way to Rochester.
It puzzles me that while you can find Philly cheesesteaks all over the country, finding beef on weck outside of Buffalo is pretty much impossible.
Yeah but Cheesesteaks anywhere outside of Philly aren't good ones...unless I'm making one :D
(I'm a Philly native...)
I've never even heard of Beef on Weck
So I'm looking for a restaurant for a date and a place called Rohrbachs came up. As I'm looking at the menu, there's a dish called "Beef on Wick." Hmmm...same thing??
Here's their website:
Rohrbach’s "Beef on Wick”
Slow roasted beef served steaming hot on a
fresh home baked kimmelwick roll with
a side of au jus and horseradish.
Thanks, Kat. If you go to Rohrbach’s before May 24, please let me know what you think of it.
Rohbacks is a drive from Rochester if you are visiting. It is on what seems to be a back road about 15 minutes west of Rochester. I've been there for dinner. They specialize in German Food - not sure if I would drive there for Beef on Wick. Dinner was good - sampler beer was great! It was a fun place out in the middle of no where!
