Memorial Day Weekend plans

The Corning Museum of Glass and "American Impressionism: Paintings from The Phillips Collection" at Memorial Art Gallery are two reasons my husband and I plus friends (ages 55-64) are considering a trip to Rochester over Memorial Day Weekend. We'd appreciate your comments on either plus recommendations on a B&B and notable (in their distinctiveness, not necessarily the most expensive) spots for lunch and dinner.

Corning is a good hour and forty-five minutes away. Were you thinking of staying in Rochester and then driving down just for the day? Or did you want places in Corning?

It seems as if there's plenty to do in Rochester for May 24-26 without driving to Corning. Our trip from Cleveland will take five hours itself.

Ok, that's why I wanted to check about driving down to Corning!! Perhaps someone else can recommend a B&B, I know some chain hotels, but not really a B&B. What kind of lunch & dinner places are you looking for? Something simple, casual, or more upscale?

What kind of lunch & dinner places are we looking for? Something memorable...could be simple, casual, or more upscale. Actually a range would be good (for our budgets). The four of us regularly seek out new dining adventures; in fact we're headed to Cleveland's Ethiopian restaurant (Empress Tatu) to celebrate Sally's birthday next week.

I moved to Rochester last May and there were two things everyone asked me when it came to food. 1) Have you had a garbage plate yet? (My reaction: Ummm, ew, what's a garbage plate?? This should explain: http://rocwiki.org/Garbage_Plates) As of 2 weeks ago, I have finally had a garbage plate. In my opinion it was okay, better if you're stumbling home drunk at 2am I'm sure...and I wasn't. If you want something that's truly a Rochester "delicacy" perhaps someone can recommend their favorite location for one. 2) Have you been to Dinosaur? That also took me a while, but I've been back quite a few times. It's a BBQ place that I think started in Syracuse. Here's some information on that: http://rocwiki.org/Dinosaur_Bar-B-Que One of people's biggest complaints is parking, but there's a parking garage on the corner. I just park there if there's nothing on the street outside. There usually is a decent wait though, so be prepared. Might want to check it out for lunch.

Speaking of lunch, I just ate at this place Friday night. Had a lovely night, the staff was wonderful and the food was great. Well priced. They have a lot of paninis. Depending on what you're doing during the day, it's located right downtown, so it makes it easy to pop over: http://rocwiki.org/Gusto.

Something else that's a little different is this place: http://rocwiki.org/Simply_Crepes. The one location is in Pittsford, right on the Erie Canal. (My Dad was so excited he got to see the Erie Canal when I moved here, so if you are also interested in seeing it, I believe Pittsford has a park...) I haven't actually been to Simply Crepes, but I've eaten it at the Ball Park & it's tasty...yes, at the Ball Park! Why not, right?

I have more restaurants to recommend, but have run out of time, I'll post more later.

Thanks, Kat, for the great suggestions.

Tell me, is there any reason NOT to come Memorial Day Weekend? It seems as if a number of places to stay are already booked. We could postpone our visit until June 7-9.

The two places I might recommend to stay would be The Inn on Broadway (that is downtown)

or the Delmonte Marriott in the Village of Pittsford.

My favorite restaurant is Veneto (it's downtown) - you would want reservation if you are 4 or more. It is casual, great food.

Also downtown-ish is Sinbads on Park Ave. We like it in there a lot.

If you walk through the Park Ave area, be sure to browse through the Parkleigh Pharmacy (NOT a pharmacy)

and Stevers Candy Store

and Craft Co #6

If you are in the Village of Pittsford there is a neat Crepe restaurant in Schoen Place. That is along the historic Erie Canal. There are also shops and boutiques in there and along the village main street. Nearby is the amazing Pittsford Wegmans. A must do. Their Tastings restaurant is wonderful.

If it were me I'd come here for the Jazz festival. It is HOT. That is June 13 - 21.

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks, Carmen, for such an array of suggestions. Yes, we do want to come for the jazz festival some time but not this year as we have plans to hear Chris Botti in Pittsburgh June 21.

RJF line up released today looks terrific, but given that we'll be in town several weeks beforehand, can anyone steer us someplace to listen Saturday and/or Sunday evening?
