we plan to rent a car - please advice

Dear All,

We plan to visit Zanzibar in December and we plan to rent a car. Based on your experience, could you please advice a reliable company to rent a car (incl prices)?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Just back from Zanzibar (wonderful trip). We rented from Sabry Jumar at Zanzibar Car Hire (www.zanzibarcarhire.com) and were really pleased with the experience. He met us at the airport both on arrival and departure, sorted out the International Driving Licence which we needed, gave us good advice and was charming. I did a lot of research between 3 companies before choosing him. Driving in Zanzibar is easy - we were stopped 3 times at police road checks but never any problems.

Another vote for Sabry and Zanzibar Car Hire, Ltd. (www.zanzibarcarhire.com).

We rented from Sabry back in late August/early September. As with Christopher, he met us at the airport and dropped us off, his car worked well for us and we had no problems driving all around the island for the 3 days we rented it. We had no troubles with any car-related paperwork because we brought our International Drivers licenses with us (in US, they are easy to get at any AAA location, even if you are not a AAA member). We were stopped at a few checkpoints, but were only delayed at one - the officer was obviously looking for a bribe and telling us that the driving license was good for Tanzania, but it didn't say Zanzibar, so we were driving illegally. We just politely kept repeating that Zanzibar was part of Tanzania and therefore it was good there, too, until he got bored and let us go on through his checkpoint. :-)

We also spent 2.5 days in Stone Town between our car hire and leaving the island. We hired Sabry and his company to drive us around and act as our guide - both on foot and via automobile. We began calling him "Mayor Sabry" by the second day, because he knows EVERYBODY. One of the staff members at the Serena Inn even took us aside our second day there and told us privately that only one other guide in Stone Town could hold a candle to Sabry - Sabry was the best on the island. We believe it!

He took us on a marvelous village spice tour, out to Prison Island to see the giant tortoises, and to a number of historic ruins, places, and museums in and around Zanzibar town itself. We also went on a guided walk through Stone Town on foot, as well as requesting his assistance helping us shop for items we wanted to bring back as gifts.

His restaurant suggestions were all stellar, and he and his staff were ALWAYS prompt - even if we arrived somewhere early, he was already there. He is a marvelous guide to any and all things related to Stone Town, and that whole quadrant of Unguja. He probably knows the entire island that well, but we didn't go more than a few miles outside of Stone Town while we were using his guide services.

I also wanted to mention that we hadn't realized we'd have to pay for everything on Zanzibar in Tanzanian shillings (on the safari, everyone preferred US dollars, so we had few shillings on us when we arrived on Unguja). Sabry kindly filled up our rental car tank for us with his Tanzanian shillings and escorted us to a secure bank at which we could get some of our USD converted to shillings at a decent exchange rate and pay him back (as well as getting spending money). We ran low on shillings during our last day and didn't have time to run to a bank and still make a final purchase, so he kindly paid for it out of his own wallet and let us pay him back in USD at a more than fair to us exchange rate. He's just that sort of kind, considerate man.

We very highly recommend him and his car hire company for car rentals and guided tours.
