To get to I-87 South from Lake Placid -From Saranac Avenue in Lake Placid take a left at Main Street on to Mirror Lake Drive, take a left on Northwood road and a left on cobble hill road, left on Route 86 toward Wilmington. Right onto fox farm road, right onto route 9 in Upper Jay then head South on Route 9N to Keene to join Route 73 which you will follow until you get to I-87 South. I got this information from a brochure which you can pick up anywhere around the town. It also says to expect delays in Lake Placid, Upper Jay and in Keene from 8:00am to 6:00pm so I am not sure if you can leave before 8:00am or after 6:00pm it may be worth it.

One more thing the website for Ironman Lake Placid is www.ironmanusa.com it has a lot of helpful information.

That is a little confusing, because the course map on the ironman website shows 9n from Jay to Keene as part of the bike course unless Im looking at it wrong
|
I believe it will be cutting off most of the bike course, normally you can go right out of town on 73 into Keene and Keene Valley, this alternate route is bringing you around the main bike route through Wilmington and will still bring you into Keene therefore there will be delays but you will be cutting off most of the course. I copied the directions directly from the Ironman Brochure called "Getting Around on Race day"
