Gambia Newbies

My boyfriend and I are 11 days away from our first Gambia experience! We have booked to stay at the Kairaba Beach Hotel for one week - all the advice on the Forum has been excellent but one thing I'd love to get some info on...; can anyone recommend a genuine (not commercialised) but safe day trip organiser? We both are keen to experience some of the hidden and authentic treasures that TG has to offer...trying to find the balance between authentic culture and personal safety however is my concern.

Arch Tours and Tillys Tours about 3 minutes walk from your hotel. Both are established companies, locally run and you arent lining the Tour Operators pockets...Ask anyone when you get there for directions..Both beside your hotel.

any tips on the best guide book I am torn between Lonely Planet and Rough Guide...both seem to be rather old...2006 seems to be the newest version?

You wont need a guide book ,Macmillan do a fold up paoer map called ''The Gambian Travellers map '' that has info on lots of stuff for a couple of quid, and its on sale in the supermarket just on the right as you come out of your hotel gates ,(cheaper than you will pay from Amazon ,You will love the hotel ,watch out for the monkeys that visit every day ,Like people have said Arch+tillys tour Co' very good just ask your security guy at the hotel gates directions to there offices only 5-10 mins walk away ,

Enjoy your holiday ,

Lonely planet 2009 is latest I can find. Worth buying a second-hand copy. Most of the hotel/restaurant info is out of date but the rest of it is largely relevant. Very well written.

I normally use Rough Guide when I go travelling as I find the info more detailed than Lonely Planet but I don't know how up to date it is for Gambia, I'm afraid as prices change a lot from year to year and other places close down.
