Lake George without a car?

Me and my friends will be visiting Lake George for the labor day weekend (3 days). We won't have a car or a boat. Could people please provide some advice on getting around? For example, can we get to Prospect Mountain, Shelving Rock Falls, and Black Mountain Loop by bus? Thanks in advance!

Shelving Rock Falls, and Black Mountain and other mountains like Buck and Tongue cannot be accessed by bus, there is no bus for those areas. In general except for a few major areas (Albany, Glens Falls) upstate NY has limited if any public transportation. The Glens Falls transit system operates a trolley in Lake George area but that mainly runs from Glens Falls in the south to Bolton in the north. http://www.lakegeorge.com/trolley/

You can walk to Prospect Mountain from the Village. www.adk.org/trails/ProspectMountain.aspx

The most you can really do in LG without a car is to take the trolly from LG up to BOlton Landing - between the two towns there are a number of hotels/cottages and a handful of restaurants. bolton Landing is more genteel - LG village is more touristy-tacky - but has it's charm. But there are not alot of natural attractions that are walkable or on a bus route other than the lake and beaches. but the lake is beautfiul. if you rent a kayak you can get to one of the islands if you're in good shape and atheletic.

Thanks a lot for the replies! For Bolton Landing, what would be some options for activities? Again, we will be car-less, so it would need to be somewhat close to the bus stop. Thanks again!

In Bolton Landing there are shops, antique stores, boat rentals, kayak rentals & restaurants. Others things to do include two nice beaches - much smaller than Million Dollar beach in LG Village. Also you can walk the tiny town head over to the Sagamore enjoy their grounds, perhaps get a drink or snack overlooking the water at the Sagamore. The entire town is small (tiny actually) so be able to walk around all of it is no problem.

With regard to Prospect Mountain, there is a hiking trail that is accessible from LG village. Quoting from another website: "Prospect Mountain Trail, marked 1.7 miles long, leads to the summit. To reach the trail from Lake George Village, turn left on Montcalm Street to Smith Street. At Smith Street, turn south a half block to the sign indicating the start of the trail, where it crosses the Northway on an elevated walkway. The climb to the summit is difficult but rewarding. The trail travels part the roadbed of an old funicular railway that served a once thriving summer hotel on the mountain."

It's not THAT difficult of a hike.
