Camping in Kalahari

Hi,

Im going to be travelling solo in Namibia & Botswana for a month and really want to camp a few days in the Kalahari desert.

All the organised trips there seem to be really expensive as is hiring a car.

Does anyone know of a company that does budget camp safari's not originating in SA?

Thanks

Maun, Botswana

There are quite a few that offer budget safaris from Maun, just google "Maun safari company" and you should find a few. Good luck. You are looking at average 150 - 200 us$ for a budget camping safari

There are a couple of companies operating from Maun, Botswana that offer camping trips to the Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans. You can look into Bushways Safaris, Letaka Safaris (luxury camping) etc.

There are not many 'scheduled departure' trips just into the Kalahari that you can join. I think only Bush Ways has this and not many departures.

There are many small operators that would give you a private trip (see the list onthe Botswana Tourism website) but if you are just 1 or 2 persons then it is quite expensive and would be cheaper to go to a lodge (many will waive the single surcharge on accomodation, but flights are a problem).

Hi. We are visiting the Kalahari in May, and we are not paying $600 pp per night either. We are renting a 4X4 in Maun which comes fully equipped with camping gear and tent (it's a pop-up and you sleep on the roof.) We have found two campsites in the Kalahari, and a lodge where you can eat. There are toilets, basic showers in the campsites. The best part is you're away from the crowds if you do this. Figure $250 to $300 a day for the 4X4. That's half what you will pay for an organized safari tour.
