Sabi Sand: Night Under the Stars

Hello everyone!

I'm planning a SA vacation including a three-day safari trip in mid to late September 2011. As it will be our 11th anniversary, I want to surprise my girlfriend with a romantic and luxurious night under the stars for one of the nights we're in the bush. I understand that Lion Sands has a tree house that would be perfect for this, and also Londolozi allows sleepouts on their lookout deck. I'm wondering, are there any other lodges that could make such arrangements? I'd just like to know all my options before choosing one lodge or another. And another thing, is this plan even realistic, with due consideration for the weather? I have no idea how frequently it rains there at that time of year, and equally clueless as to what time of day the rain usually falls.

Thanks in advance, all responses would be much appreciated!

The first rains of spring could start falling in September, but USUALLY September is pretty much a dry month in the Sabi Sands. The lodge will require that you also pay for a guest room for that night, in case you have to sleep indoors due to weather conditions.

Thanks Tanya, that's good to know. I'm keen on going to Ivory Lodge, since I've read that it has superior dining to the other lodges, but I've also read that it can be quite reclusive. My girlfriend's pretty social and I think she would enjoy mingling with other guests. Will there be much opportunity for socializing if we stay at Ivory Lodge, or do you think it would be less lonesome at River Lodge/Londolozi?

Lion Sands Ivory Lodge has been designed in such a way that it is the guests' choice whether they want to have total privacy, or whether they would prefer to mingle with other guests. If you and your girlfriend would enjoy to mingle with other guests, then you can have all of your meals etc at the public areas of Ivory Lodge, and there should be plenty of opportunity to mingle with other guests. Guests who prefer their privacy, will dine in the luxury of their suites and not make use of the public areas, but during my stays at Ivory Lodge, many of the guests have always dined in the public areas and enjoyed socialising in the bar, etc.

Ivory Lodge is one of the really luxurious accommodations - but with only six suites and a guest profile that skews wealthy, you might not have the ambience you are thinking of. The River Lodge, less expensive, larger, still great dining and an actual bar, might be better. One night when I was there, we went to pick up the Tree House couple and while waiting for them to descend, I spotted tracks in the sand below it. Leopard tracks... fresh. Pretty cool. The Tree House isn't a house, by the way. Your only 'walls' and 'ceiling' are the (romantic) mosquito net.

Thanks Dave. River Lodge had been my first choice - but I hesitated after reading some extremely negative reviews on TripAdvisor, mixed in with the glowing ones. It's really much more in my price range, though I would hate to be in the minority group that didn't have a good experience there. But based on your recommendation, I'll give it some serious consideration. The place does look beautiful...

Here's a video I shot at River Lodge - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkRAfnDBh5k - BUT, the guest rooms have been improved since this was made 2 years ago. They are still not as big as some other properties in a similar price range - but I have to say (and many more agree) that the dining there is far above expectations. Creative, served with grace and energy. Plus, you see the same wildlife you would see from Ivory Lodge.. hahaha..

I literally just got back from Lion Sands today. I stayed at Ivory Lodge for my 5th time. During my stay I got to visit the new rooms that were remodeled including some superior rooms at River Lodge. At Ivory, you get an additional room that I never used and a small plunge pool I never used. The superior rooms at River are exactly the same as Ivory minus those two items and at a considerable less cost. River is much more social and I spent much of my time there and the food is just as good as at Ivory. I am already thinking about my next trip there and I think I will be staying at River this next time !

Thanks Mike & Dave! You guys make a pretty convincing case for River Lodge! Just one final question: would you have any recommendations for outstanding rangers/trackers at Lion Sands?
