Simbambili road conditions and tipping

I am planning to visit Simbambili in mid-January for three days and have a few auestions reagrding it.

1. What are current road conditions like to Gowrie Gate and then on to the lodge?

2. With Simbambili being right on the northern boundary, are neighbouring farms and settlements visible when driving around game viewing which would detract from the whole experience?

3. What tipping is considered appropriate for rangers, trackers and hotel staff?

4. On leaving Simbambili at 11am on the final day, we would like to spend a night in Kruger enroute to Johannesburg. Which would be the best route and gate to use? Would it better to travel south to Phabeni rather than travelling north to Orpen?

Thank you for any assistance.

You will not be troubled by the neighboring private land to the north. Yes. There is a fence along the Sabi Sand reserve border but you will not see it once you turn down to Simbambili lodge. Your game drives will traverse several of the other private reserves, mostly to the east, right up to the unfenced border with the Kruger Park.

I drove the roads too long ago (September) to tell you about condition. But, on the best day of its life, the road will test your patience. Just drive slowly, miss the potholes, and look forward to Simbambili, it's a lovely place.

Moving to Kruger would be easiest through the Orpen gate. It's the closest to Gowrie gate. Many people you will see on the staff at the lodge can tell you the place to turn to go north to the road to the gate after you start back toward Acornhoek and the R40.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. From Simbambili to Orpen Gate would hardly be an hour. More detail on how to reach Orpen Gate:

After leaving Gowrie Gate and passing through Savile, you will come to the larger town, Hluvukani. Here, you turn right (north) and after 7 Kms of (very) rough road, you will reach Welverdiend. Here, turn left (west) for a very short distance and you will see a road to the right (north) that takes you a further 5 Kms to a good paved road. When you reach it, turn right (east) and Orpen Gate is maybe 20 Kms from there.
