Franschhoek is the centre of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve. There are some spectacular tours around Franschhoek taking in some awesome mountain passes with fantastic scenery. It’s a nature paradise with plants, birds and interesting geology. Cycling and hiking is available with or without guides although the guides know places to go that you may not find alone. If you are a keen cyclist contact Manic cycles to arrange to join one of the weekend mountain or road cycling events of the region. Go to www.pedalpower.org.za/ for more info on these events.
The biggest challenge is getting off the major roads and into the rural areas. You can also have day or overnight visits to local game parks.
After that it’s the Wine & Food to enjoy at the end of the day. All restaurants in Franschhoek are good. It's just that some are more expensive than others. Even then in most places they are value for money. There are a couple with “fusion” menus combining a touch of the East with classic European cuisine. Dutch East and La Coq. For restaurants with spectacular views go for Du Donne or La Petite Ferme. For full set 5 course meals with different wines for different courses try Le Bon Vivant or The Tasting Rooms at La Quartier Hotel.
For local tour companies go to www.franschhoek.co.za or www.franschhoek.org.za
You can also contact the only local tour company with an office in Franschhoek that you can go into and talk to, Winelands Experience. There are other companies but they tend to work from home and are only contactable by phone.
