Fall Colors

We will be flying in to Boston the second week of October and driving to Brentwood NH and then on to Stowe, Killington, Claremont, Arlington and back to Boston. Can you give many ideas on nice water falls and low to moderate hikes in these areas. We are already going to do the Mt. Washington Auto Tour, but looking for other scenic drives or short hikes.

Looking for back roads from Brentwood NH and then on to Stowe, Killington, Claremont, Arlington and back to Boston. We will be there from the 6th of October until 10th and would like to avoid the grid lock. We do however still want to see the scenery, waterfalls, and covered bridges. Anyone who lives in the area have any back road ideas that not many people know about?

The map makers know about all the roads, and for the most part if you just look at a road map and pick out secondary roads that go where you're headed, you'll find lovely scenery.

However, I'll mention an area I love that is somewhat off the beaten track. It would also be somewhat off the route you would likely take if you were seeking to go directly from Brentwood to Stowe, but it wouldn't be too much of a detour for people looking for scenic tours. It's the area between the lakes and the mountains, roughly bounded by Wolfeboro, Moultonborough, Center Sandwich, and Chocorua.. Try the ride between Chocorua and Center Sandwich on Routes 113 and 113A, going through Tamworth (go the block or two from the main road to the center of the village, which is classic New England) and North Sandwich. Travel the length of Route 171, and go to Castle in the Clouds. When you get there, ask how to find the Brook Trail, a short, easy hike to six or seven waterfalls.

I second wpsaukee's route suggestion. It's a beautiful unhurried area to explore.
