Downtown Thoughts

I will be in Vegas 2/3/14 to 2/12/14 with my mother. This will be my fourth trip and her first. I am thinking of staying downtown the first two night, but have heard that downtown is dangerous. I was hoping for thoughts and insights about downtown. My mother and I both use canes would this make us targets?

Also if you do think it is safe to stay downtown which hotel might be the best to stay at? Thanks.

Downtown under the huge LED light show tunnel is a very safe to be and is always bustling and lively. Great place for you and your mother.

Downtown is no more dangerous than the strip if you stay within the confines of Fremont street. Also, the casinos are much closer together so that should help your mobility situation. Have a great time!

I wouldn't worry about being "unsafe" at all downtown where the casinos are. It's when you venture outside of the "canopy area" that some things can be a bit interesting. Take the normal travel/safety precautions and you'll be just fine at the downtown casinos.

For your own enjoyment, I'd book the Golden Nugget, as it's the nicest of the downtown properties, which still being very affordable

Downtown is very dangerous. So is Salem, OR. Walking out your front door is dangerous. But your home is also dangerous. Stay out of your bathroom, because that is the most dangerous room in your very dangerous house. Stay out of the kitchen, because that is the next most dangerous room. Curl up into the fetal position and hide, to minimize the dangers.

Now that we got that out of the way, downtown is no more dangerous than uptown or the east side or the west side. Just don't be a complete idiot and you will probably be fine.

It is generally accepted that the Golden Nugget is the best hotel in downtown Vegas. Four Queens is probably the second best.

The Fremont Street Experience is heavily policed.

Stay at a hotel on the strip for your entire stay. You'll feel more comfortable if you have any apprehension of downtown.

Fremont Street is no more dangerous than the strip. Maybe less.

While downtown is not necessarily dangerous, I personally don't find it all that inviting either. When asked, I always recommend that folks stay on the strip and visit downtown for one evening just to see the light show, take in the atmosphere, possibly have dinner at any one several good restaurants, etc.

I can't remember a single trip in the past 20 years where I have wanted to be down there for more than one evening, but everyone is different so hope you enjoy your trip whatever you decide to do, Cheers!

Downtown is as safe as the strip. You have homeless and panhandlers on the strip but the area on strip is bigger so not as noticeable as the confined area on Fremont.

I was DT in Sept, and I found that police are doing a fine job making the homeless and panhandlers move on. Security is plentiful on Fremont. They are trying to revive DT so police, Mayor, and hotels are watching for unsavory types.

Just don't make yourself a target . .use a crossbody bag, don't wear flashy jewelry, don't flash money.

I would recommend the Nugget and ask for a room in the Gold Tower or Rush tower. The gold tower is close to casino. You can easily walk to Binion's 4Queens, Fremont.

If you feel uncomfortable in the slightest about staying DT, I don't think I would. You can always visit DT for the day and get a feel for it.

I stay at the Golden Nugget and have for 35 years. Wouldn't think of staying any where else.

Enjoy your visit to Vegas!!!

Downtown is safe, for the reasons that other posters have indicated. And, if you and your Mom have mobility issues, it's much easier going from one casino to another downtown. I usually recommend people stay on the strip for their first visit but I've been staying downtown for the past 10 years and really like it. Since you're going to be there for more than a week, maybe you'd consider breaking up your trip: stay the first few days (3rd to 7th) on the strip and then move downtown (where it's cheaper) from Friday until you leave. As for hotels downtown, stay at the Nugget.
