Anybody Else Remember Jai Alai?

MGM use to have it. It was a great way to pass a hot afternoon.

I believe it ended because of game fixing.

How about the dog racing? Were there ever dog tracks in Las Vegas?

I don't remember it from Vegas, but I do remember it when I lived in Florida. Talk about a FAST game!

jai alai was my first exposure to gambling I used to go with my parents and my father and whoever they went with used to have me run and place the bets for them. I was 11 or 12 and everybody at the betting windows knew my name.. Then they changed the laws to where you had to be 18 just to get in the building and I couldn't go anymore. They used to have me buy them cigarettes too. Wow how times have changed!

We're showing our age, here:-)....I remember watching matches on tv.....and also remember as a kid when Mom sent me to the neighborhood store to buy cigarettes for her! Don't know about dog racing in Vegas as my first trip there was only about 8 years ago.

We went to Jai Alai at the MGM back in the 80's on our very first trip i believe. I had no clue how to play the game and i think i fell asleep lol.

I used to go to the matches at Newport RI which is now a small casino. I loved the game but it was very hard to figure out...not for major cash bets but good for some fun...

I remember the mutual pools being so small that you could get some decent payouts by watching the totals and see the show payouts be higher than the win...kinda messed up. You could hit a superfecta by just getting the 1st two guys correct...

I think I remember seeing the signs for Jai Alai at the old MGM but never actually saw the game in person. It was suppose to be the next big thing that would sweep the nation - guess not. As a kid, I was sent to buy cigarettes for my mom too. Haven't thought about either of these topics for quite a while.

Yes, in the early 80's very short lived at Las Vegas Downs on the far east side of the Valley in what is Old Henderson.

It is now illegal in the state.

Boucharda, I've been to that place too! It was so long ago, at least 20 years, I couldn't remember where it was located. But we were staying in Newport so it must be the same place.

Is this the game where they sling a ball at the wall via a curved glove type thingy? Called Pelota in Europe.

Used to be a clip of it in the opening credits of Miami Vice I think.

Never knew it was payed in Vegas.

Jai Alai is still around in Florida, but struggling to survive. It was HUGE 30 years ago, but the owners never reinvested in the sport. There was a nasty players strike and things like lotto and other forms of gambling came to town. I love the sport, play as a amateur, and created this site to help give it a little visibility: http://www.merryfestival.com/

If you are ever in Orlando in January, there is the annual Citrus tournament which is a must see. The fronton (building) is packed with fans like years ago and the best players in the world are in town for a 2 night tournament. It's typically the 3rd week in January.
