We just got back from a stay at a rented condo in Whitefish, Montana at Pinnacle Ridge Condos, unit 4. HomeAway rents this property at attractive rates in my opinion, during the summer season. Here is a review of the condo and HomeAway.
The property is very nice and we enjoyed all aspects as far as the installed assets, layout, furniture, etc of the place. I was in Whitefish to visit older relatives so we did not spend most of our time at the condo.
There are some pretty severe problems with code access to the place and how the company handles that. We got in the first night of our arrival fine.
The first morning (6/23) after our arrival, at about 930am the maid service person let herself in and demanded to know who we were. I told her I would have to get dressed but she was inside the place and demanding my immediate presence. This was not so pleasant. She did apologize after calling the property management, but it was an unnecessary incident.
The next morning (6/24), the hot tub service person showed up at 930am, opened up the place with a code and walked in announcing his presence as he walked up the entry stairs inside of the condo. He was nice but also traipsed through the place and was yet another person entering the condo with a code to our dismay.
The next night (6/25), the next renter of the condo showed up, let themselves in with a code and proceeded to tirade about the problem with the condo arrangements and their travel problems. They also came fully into the condo and their children ran into the place excited to see the living room and the place. The renter demanded I show a copy of my letter from you and disputed with me about who should be in the condo. She tiraded about her travel from Phoenix, rental cars, etc at 930pm. Needless to say we were very uncomfortable at this point from the numerous folks entering the condo unexpectedly with 2 of the entries from hostile, angry people. I have rented condos at Big Mountain, Whistler and many other skiing destinations. I have also stayed in rented condos for relocation purposes for work many times. This is the sloppiest control of keys/access codes I have ever seen. Our daughters were in the hot tub at the time when the renters arrived/departed. They mentioned that the other renters shouted obscenities as they drove away across the road above the condo which is adjacent to the hot tub.
When we entered the condo the night of 6/22, the bed sheets were missing for the 2 upstairs beds and the clean ones for one bed were thrown on the stairs. We found that there were no bath towels and we did some small cleanup in the kitchen from previous use, though the place was mostly clean. The maid service person had offered to go in and clean up after she apologized, 6/23. We had finished the clean up 6/22, linens and such after having found a supply closet in the garage our first night. Previous use dirty linens in large bags and 2 full trash cans gave the garage a stench, but they were removed by the cleaning person eventually. We kept the garage door closed anyhow, but I'm not sure how I could have parked in the garage.
The property is nicely furnished and appears pretty new. Really nice amenities down to the silverware, dishes and cookware you can truly use. We found everything we needed even if we had to search a bit. There are no directions for the hot tub or the furnace. These should be posted. I found a placard in a drawer with information about the hot tub, but it was ambiguous at best. I believe the hot tub can be destroyed by leaving the jets on high, but there is no easily found information about this on the hot tub. We didn't have problems and did not use the jets on high. I was concerned since this brand of hot tub idles and circulates at a higher level than I have seen, but no manual to figure it out.
There are a few missing items. A drawer in the upstairs 2nd bedroom is missing. There appears to have been designer bedding for the master bedroom, but is was missing though we were fine with the clean linens/white comforter. There is a Belkin wireless router, but no power supply or spare plug to connect it if there was a power supply. We used the open/unsecure wireless from unit 2 as the Pinnacle wireless for the site requires a password which we did not have.
I would recommend a warning about the steep stairs in the place as older folks will not be able to navigate up the stairs at all. This is part of the design and was fine for most of us. Also, there is no AC in the place so it gets about 85F and above upstairs unless you open windows. The problem with open windows is moths and other flying insects. We minimized the opening of windows but had to do so since we would not have been able to use the upper floor with 2 bedrooms. I noted that there were several large carpenter ants inside the property. A doorbell should be installed so service people can have the ability to ring it first prior to just opening the place with a code. There is no way to lock or deadbolt the front door to keep service or other folks out. The only lock is the coded lock.
I would stay again at the company can figure out the code access issues. I did not sleep the night after the other renters came into the condo and confronted us.
The property management rep did respond to calls over the weekend during our stay and she tried to get things going such as a locksmith who showed up at 8pm the next day to recode the entry for our sake. We took our valuables with us in the trunk of the car each time after the access problems.
