Warning - Great Vacations Club - Don'T Do iT!

In a weak moment, my wife and I purchased a bronze membership in the Great Vacations Club while we were visiting the Mayan properties in Acapulco this past spring. It included six weeks any size unit in the GVC network for $349/wk, six last minute weeks any size unit from $199/wk, one week for $299/wk, one Mayan resort week any siz eunit - $199, one one-week cruise for $399 and more. Sounds good!

When we returned home we tried to see where we could go on our next vacation. Using their website and just entering some dates without destinations we found NO PROPERTIES AVAILABLE to stay. So we tried some other dates - same result. Then tried other dates - same result. Finally we were able to find that if we used the cruise option (supposedly a 7 day cruise) and added $399 we could cruise in an inside cabin on a four day cruise. I could buy passage on that cruise cheaper by going to the cruise company's website!

The document you sign says there are no blackout dates to any of this. That's true, however it is all SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY! And there doesn't appear to be any - ever. We have tried on numerous occasions to find places to stay all with the same result.

The old adage is true - if it sounds too good to be true - it probalbly is. I hope you learn from our mistake.

Too late for us but we will spread the word for anyone going to Mexico. We have not tried to use it yet but I suspect we may have a similar outcome.

We also bought into the scam and cannot get ANY availability! What a horrible experience that it has left in our minds about our first very gullible trip to Mexico.

I have also been taken by their scam in October of 2005 in Los Cabos, Mexico.

I have filed complaint with BBB in AZ, but they were unsuccessful in obtaining a response. There are some postings on the web site www.squeakywheel.com I will be contacting those people. Have you had any response from GVC?

Hi,

My husband and I bought the same package in Mazatlan at Mayan in February. We came home, searched absolutely everywhere at all kinds of dates and found nothing. We called GVC in Mazatlan and they assured us that nothing was posted yet, but that RCI and II would be loading on their inventory in April or May. Somehow, I doubt it.

Our credit card can't help because the purchase was made more than 100 miles from home.

My next move is to contact Chris Elliott, a travel writer on the internet who helps with such situations.

What a horrible feeling to be scammed so badly.

Have you all found the website "Mayanresorts.org/index.htm"? It has a fabulous section headed "A Mayan Palace of Shame--potential mayan palace buyer or visitor, BEWARE!

Then, it talks about the sting of Great Vacations Club, a class action suit against mayan palace resorts and lots of other very interesting topics.

Check it out.

Mayan Palace is really got a bad reputation for selling both the GVC and their timeshares based on a bunch of outright lies. We purchased the timeshare package and would never have purchased if they had told us the truth. There are alot of people who are banding together to take legal action and hold MP accountable. Another website that is gathering names for a class action suit is mayanresorts.info. If all those angry purchasers who have posted on various sites got together to launch a class action suit, there would be hundreds if not thousands of people. Let's not be complacent and think there is nothing we can do. There is power in numbers.

I wrote last winter that my husband and I were scammed by GVC. There was no availability. Then, it changed and you could go for only one week. Now, the latest is that the price that was supposed to be "from $349" is $1800! What a ripoff! And they lied to our credit card and said they never told us that we could have back to back weeks, which of course they swore up and down to us we could.

When I wrote reservations and complained, they sent me to customer service. They sent me back to reservations who told me...guess what?...Subject to availability!

So many of us have been scammed. Isn't there something we can do?

Although it may be to late, I would suggest you post on squeakywheel.com. I did this and was contacted by GVC within a week. I received all my money back.

to jeaste:

I did post on Squeaky Wheel and heard from GVC that they had one Mayan Resort week for $199. When I checked, there were absolutely none for all of Jan, Feb, and half of March -- the times we wanted to go and the rep had promised us absolutely something would be available at those times. She then went on to say that There were many places for $759 per week in the "from $349" category. I'm going to try for 3 wks. in a row, which they promised us, but I doubt they'll allow it. She finished with a snotty remark"PLease take the time to look at your options prior to making a complaint about something that is available. We have over 15,000 satisfied GVC members." I somehow doubt that. Will let you know what happens wiwth the request for 3 wks. in a row. Thanks for the suggestion.
