Best half-way place to stay with teens

We are taking a road trip from Houston to Gatlinburg next month. I'm looking for a stopping place to stay somewhere in Miss. We are traveling with 4 boys and would like to stay somewhere that might have something for them to do. I saw that Hattiesburg is sort of on the way, but not sure what that town is like. Any suggestions for us?

Hattiesburg, MS is a nice town and the home of University of Southern Mississippi. There are some nice hotels at the Intersection of I 59 and # 98 and some good restaurants in town also. Leatha's is famous for BBQ and it's just W of I 59 on # 98 on the S side of # 98 behind a RV sales joint.

I would pass Hattiesburg and try to make it to Tuscaloosa, AL or even Birmingham, AL. You would be close to your destination at that point. Good luck.

Just a notation on Lethas .... since you're probably more used to TX BBQ flavors. I've been told (my parents currently live in H'burg), that Letha's bbq (sauce) is very sweet as are some of the sides..... and tea!

If you plan to make a stop that early in the trip, I'd detour a very few miles and continue along I10 to the Gulfport/Biloxi area - it's my understanding (from friends who live there) the seafood is back! except for the oysters, which are still not plentiful. The white sand beach would be there - free of charge - for the boys.

To get back an track, you could take hwy 49 (4 lanes) North out of Gulfport to H'burg. But, honestly, if you are only taking 2 days to make Gatlinburg, I'd definitely push further to the NE before stopping that first night.
