we are traveling from N. Alabama in Sept. down thru Natchez, Hattisburg to Biloxi, can you give us ideas on what all there is to do on our way and when we get there? We like to try unusual restaurants, local things that are interesting that aren't advertised, off the beaten path things. Any hints?

There is a great rails-to-trails path in Hattiesburg, the Longleaf trace. There are bike rentals (even tandems) at the trailhead near the trailhead at the University of Southern Mississippi. You can also just walk part of it. You may be interested in checking out Leatha's BBQ in Hattiesburg. On the coast, I recommend checking out the town of Ocean Springs for cool shops and restaurants.
