Family Trip 2013-Where to rent houses

Hello! Looking to rent two homes near each other for a family of 15 (total). I have never been to Traverse City. Is there an ideal location to stay close to restaurants and beaches? Any guidance of where to look for home rentals would be appreciated :)

One place you might want to look is a web site called Vacation Rentals By Owners (VRBO)

Their web site is here -

If you're looking for specific areas..anywhere with waterfront in the Grand Traverse area will make you happy... whether it's out at Spider Lake, Lake Leelanau or on the big lake...

What time of year? The "ideal location" may depentd on the makeup of your party and what you like to do. i.e. Boating, wine tours, finer dining, gambling, sunbathing, building sand castles, etc. ...

Lake Michigan / Grand Traverse Bay is beautiful but rougher, cooler, and some might argue, better for big boat activity. Inland lakes near TC are beautiful, usually warmer, and may be better for small children, water sports (skiing, tubing, wakeboarding) and small-boat sailing. Glen, Crystal, Leelanau, Torch, are teriffic lakes in the TC area

You can find single homes that sleep 15 to 64 people on both HA and VRBO.

HomeAway is another vacation home rental site (related to VRBO)

Thank you so much for the information!

We will be traveling with multiple families that include grandparents, parents in our 30's, and grand kids 1-5 years old for a total of 18 people. Looking at July. The little kids are our main focus so being by the water with beach is a must. The calm lakes sound nice. Is there a main downtown area that would be ideal to be close to? Could it be in walking distance to homes/condos? Planning on going out to eat for some meals, going to the beach, some nights out without the kids, will probably look into a wine tour or boat ride....great ideas!

Okay, well, if you want to stay on the beach.. you will not be in walking distance to downtown Traverse City.. However, that said, you could say on Lake Leelanua and be close to both SUtton's Bay (which is a small little town) and driving distance to Traverse City.

If you want the water and the city both within walking distance, you might try Elk Rapids, Petoskey or Charlevoix.
