Dining out for Christmas dinner in Traverse City area

Our family of five (3 daughters, ages 25, 24, and 15) will be in my husband's hometown of Cadillac over Christmas. We plan to drive up to Traverse City to see the Les Miserable movie on Christmas Day. It would be fun to have a nice Christmas dinner buffet somewhere in the area either before or after the movie.

I am having difficulty finding this information online, so I turn to trusty Trip Adivisor to get an answer.

Which Traverse City restautants serve a Christmas buffet in the $20-$25 per person range?

Aerie Restaurant at the Grand Traverse Resort-pricey, however. $29/adult. We have eaten the Sunday breakfast buffet here a few times and really enjoyed it.

I do not know of any other restaurants open during Christmas Day. If I find out more, I will let you know. You might want to call the Visitor's Center in TC and ask them for info. (231) 947-0692

Maybe check out Turtle Creek Casino. I know they have a buffet. Its not the best casino buffet in the state by any means but would certainly be in your price range. Even tho its located in a corner of the casino, I am sure they would allow your 15 yo to walk thru without stopping.

One other website to monitor as it gets closer to the holiday is www.mynorth.com.

As specific holidays approach, they often have articles about where to go/eat, what to do, around those events. You might find some info there as well. At the very least, they'll offer links to specific restaurants, too.

However one caveat: they cover more than just TC in their scope (though Traverse is the primary focus).

Good luck!

To make sure you get what we're saying - It's too early to know about Christmas plans right now. All of the restos have their Thanksgiving menus set for this Thursday. You have plenty of time, so stay flexible for the moment, and know that for that day there will most likely be several good choices from which to pick. Weather provided, it should be a fine day - as long as the movie lives up to the hype. And Christmas is on a Tuesday - I'd suggest you send us a reminder post the week before...We'll be sure to have an answer for you by then.

Thanks! I made a reservation today for the Aerie at the Grand Traverse Resort. But I can change that if I find a better option. I will check back on this thread after Thanksgiving.

Is the Aerie as nice as it sounds? The meal and movie and special day out are our Christmas gift to my mother-in-law, who is 85 and does not get out as much as she used to.

I think your mother-in-law would really enjoy that gift. In fact, I'd like it too.

My wife and I ate at the Aerie a few years ago, and the food was nearly as good as the view. Now admittedly, it was our only visit, but we were pleased to note that it wasn't one of those restaurants that relied on a stunning location to serve passable fare.

Why haven't we been back? Laziness, really. We're up on the northwest side of TC, and the Aerie is a ways east. This thread has prompted a good reminder to return!

Maybe you should forward this thread to your family, Northernite!

Aerie is really nice and the view is spectacular! I have met with their staff before and they really seem to know what they are doing there but I can't really comment on their buffets because I have never tried any of them.

Turtle Creek Casino (less than a mile from Aerie/The GT Resort) has a great X-mas buffet but you do have to walk through the Casino to get there.
