Grand Marais has won a $40,000 first prize in a nationwide Reader's Digest contest where more than 9,000 communities have been competing for Internet votes, trying to win cash to aid civic causes. Grand Marais received 1,281,724 votes
The money will be used to improve the harbor which sand erosion could make impassible to boats by next year.
Michigan did very well in the contest. Albion took fourth place with around 643,000 votes and St. Johns was in sixth with 611,000 votes. Each will receive $10,000.
