Looking for advice for a family trip in July 08

We are looking at a 7-10 day trip, possibly camping for part of it, that would take us around Isle Royale, Copper Harbor, etc.

Our children are 9&10. They like hiking, fishing, and especially swimming. After reading these posts it sounds like we want to include time near Bete Gris. Any suggestions on places to camp, lodging and things to want to make sure to see and do?

Hello netto, A place you may like is the Porcupine Mountains. The area is just beautiful. Here is one web site that tells about the area.

Google Keeweenaw Mountain Lodge

great motel-cabins at Copper Harbor, large, clean, with big picture windows over the woods. Nice food in the main lodge restaurant

McLain Park outside of Calumet looks wonderful for camping (at least location wise). Keewenaw Mtn. Lodge as mentioned earlier or Mariner North in Copper Harbor has nice lodgings. Book Isle Royale early as you can - the reservations go quickly and stay there a couple of days - one day isn't enough. There are places in Copper Harbor for tours like kayaking. Go to the General Store in Copper Harbor for old time candy and make sure to go to Copper World and the adjoining General Store in Calumet for wonderful local items as well as tons of old time candy. Take the kids to Sand Bay just west of Eagle Harbor when the west wind is up and they will have a blast - the waves pound in - also there a some nice modest sand hills opposite the beach that are great for running up and down. Check the Michigan Nature Association - probably have a website - for some great hiking. Go to Estivant Pines just outside of Copper Harbor to hike and view virgin white pines. Maganese Falls also just outside Copper Harbor right near the road is great. Of course - head up Brockway Mtn. like everyone does and I still do every year for a wonderful view of the Keewenaw and Lake Superior. Eat at Harbor Haus in Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor Inn for good meals. Tour the Delware Mine on the way to my favorite beach - Bete Gris. It's cheap and self-guided and educational. Lake may still be cool in July unless it's late July - stil may be even then, it usually is, except last year was warm.. Tour the Eagle Harbor lighthouse and also go to the spooky, lovely cemetary in Eagle Harbor on Pine St. old, old cemetary in a lovely setting - just ask or drive around since Eagle Harbor itself is only about 8 streets. Eat at The Library in Houghton, tour the Quincy Mine in Hancock. Wheww..............
