Best time of day to head to the Cape??

We are heading to the Cape this Saturday for a concert. What is the best time of day to head down to avoid as much traffic as possible. Thinking it will be ugly on Saturday since people will be heading down for the week with the 4th being next week..

Thoughts???

If the concert is in the evening, I would wait until after 3 to leave. Otherwise, the only way to deal with the traffic is to leave before 8 & even then you're likely to get some of it.

Last Saturday we left Logan at 2PM and encountered a little Boston traffic. There was virtually no bridge traffic coming over the Sagamore and the trip to Dennisport took a bit less than 2 hours. Enjoy your day.

Just one little caveat to what CapeCodCharlie said ...

This past weekend was pretty quiet here on the Cape, all in all. This coming weekend, with the anticipated influx of lots of 4th of July week vacationers, there will be significantly heavier traffic coming onto the Cape on Friday and Saturday. The earlier you get here, the better, IMHO. Or, as kendrick said, you might want to wait until later in the afternoon when traffic should have lightened up somewhat..

Also coming from Worcester you are dealing with different traffic than someone coming from Boston, at least until you get to Rt. 6

What time does it usually die down?I'm leaving next sat from ct and was going to wait until 12 to leave (arrive at bridge 2 or 3)?

That's kind of a crap shoot on a sort-of holiday weekend like the one coming up.

Normally, arriving at the bridge in the late afternoon (around 3-4 p.m.) on a summer Saturday isn't usually too bad. Maybe a mile or two backup, which isn't all that horrible to deal with.

This coming Saturday, who knows? Could be okay in the mid-to late afternoon, or it could be a mess. There's really no way to predict with any accuracy.

I'm a big proponent of the "earlier is better" travel plan, as I said above. Most folks hate the idea of beginning their vacay by getting up, in the car, and on the road by 5 a.m. Thus, traffic at the bridges coming on Cape is usually pretty light during the early morning hours, and doesn't start to get slowed/ backed up until around 8 a.m.

There's plenty to see and do here while you await check-in time. Grab some grub, hit the beach, take in a museum, go window shopping, etc. Whatever you're doing ...

It's always better to be on this side of the bridge than the other, IMHO!

Friday Afternoon Traffic Update:

Just heard on the radio that there's already a 3 mile backup at the Bourne and it's slow at the Sag, too.

Returned about 15 minutes ago from running some errands, and I can personally attest that Rt. 28 is much busier this afternoon than it's been all week. No doubt about it, the pre-holiday weekend has begun.

Welcome to summer, one and all :-)

Hopefully, the Chamber re-opened the rest area at the end of Rt. 25 before the Bourne Bridge. It was still "closed for the season" on Tuesday of this week.
