Going with kids to Red Jacket resort from August 31 and was afraid that will be too cold. Can we swim in ocean?

Should be great weather for your stay. If you want to see specifics of years past during the same time check out www.wunderground.com and look at the history data tab. Just know that last summer was unusually rainy. Even if you miss a beach day or two there is plenty to do all over the Cape to keep you busy.

Hi fromNY038: Your hotel overlooks the Nantucket Sound. If it's any consolation, Nantucket Sound waters tend to be warmer than Cape Cod Bay and the open Atlantic. The end of August into September usually brings great warm days and pleasant, cooler evenings. It has been a steam bath on the Cape this summer so it might not even get that cool at night! If the weather pattern holds, the chance of rain will still be slim. Have a wonderful time at the beach and enjoy your swim!

The ocean is at its warmest right about now. In early September, the ocean is typically as warm as it was in late July. Early September is great for swimming in the ocean along the south coast of Massachusetts. (The ocean warms up and cools down more slowly than the air.)

bellopapa06: Take a look at 'Which Town?' under 'frequent questions' on the right side of your computer screen to get an idea of what the Cape towns offer. Many towns will fit the bill. You might want to concentrate on towns that have a defined town center such as Falmouth, Sandwich, Hyannis, Harwichport, Chatham, Orleans, Wellfleet, Provincetown.

For most of 15 years, we went to the Cape in early September, usually right after Labor Day. (We also stayed once in mid-October, early March, and early May) Our experience with early September weather has almost always been wonderful. Warm days and cooler nights, generally. Over the years, there have been hurricanes brewing down south that kept us watching the weather channel, but they would either reach the Cape before or after our vacation, so we always felt very thankful that the hurricanes had little effect on our stays except maybe a rougher ocean or a little more wind.

This is the first year that we aren't coming to the Cape due to finances, so I enjoy living vicariously through others' plans and trip reports on this forum. Hopefully, we'll be able to come to the Cape next year, and it'll be even sweeter after having missed a year.
