Hotel/Motel Inspection?

Is there an agency in charge of checking hotels for sanitary condition and/or cleanliness?

Our last experience, arriving late at night into La Plata and striking out with several of the nicer hotels, ended up with the Patuxent Inn. In our many years of traveling, I do not believe I have ever had encountered such a "flea bag" with bath towels as dirty as if they had been used to scrub floors with. Exhaust fans hanging down, ready to drop on your head, and carpeting that looked like a vacuum had not touched in month.

Is there any way to have some of those hotel comply with the basic cleanliness since they obviously are not providing rooms for free.............

Off the top of my head, you would see if one of the following entities handles these types of issues, or if they can direct you to who would:

Charles County Health Department (http://www.charlescountyhealth.org/)

Maryland Department of Tourism (http://www.mdisfun.org/)

Charles County Chamber of Commerce (http://www.charlescountychamber.org/)

No guarantees, but this might be a place to start.

This doesn't excuse the unsanitary condition but many people that are homeless use this hotel as their home. They rent the rooms by the week. There are several of these in our area. They are independently owned...not part of a chain. In Charles County I would stick to the national chain hotels.
