Hello,
Can anyone suggest a nice hotel within a mile of the Conference Center? I will be in Bethesda for a conference in November from Australia and find it difficult to justify paying nearly $300 per night at the North Marriott.

You are not too far from the metro station - there are several hotels in downtown Bethesda that may be more reasonably priced. You may also consider Rockville, which has a nice town square. There may also be a shuttle from the Marriott on Democracy Blvd that is worth checking out.
The Bethesda North Marriott Conference Center is actually located right next to the White Flint Metro Station (which is either in North Bethesda or Rockville, depending on the map you consult). There are few other choices there. A Metro stop away at Twinbrook is the Hilton Rockville (http://www.rockvillehotel.com) and a Holiday Inn Express (http://www.rockvillemdhotel.com).
Beyond those two hotels, you either need to go north to Gaithersburg or south to Bethesda proper to get a larger selection of hotel. None of those hotels are all that close to a Metro station.
