Activities - What is Portland known for ?

I want to traverl to Maine because I have never been there but have heard raves about the state, scenery, food.

I thought about Portland. I like hiking, kayaking, food, culture/history and anything else really. I want to experience what the area is known for.

What is a good area to stay in Portland ?

Are there good tour companies that provide for whale watching, sailing ?

WHat about hiking ?

I was going to spend 5-8 days ? Is that too much for Portland ?

And when you want to walk off all that food try this site for a map of trails in Portland: http://trails.org/our-trails/ I especially like the Back Cove Trail and the Mackworth Island Trail.

Portland will give you a great "small city" feel and will be a great base for all kinds of day-trip opportunities.... coastal villages with sandy beaches in southern Maine, coastal villages with more rocky coastlines to the north, nice walking/hiking immediately in-town and easy rides to more rural, more challenging hiking.... plus ferry rides to harbor islands and other on-the-water opportunities right there in the city. For someone who've never been to Maine before, it's a great "first destination.' Five-to-eight days should give you a chance to get a nice feel for Maine -- and allow some flexibility in case you get some bad-weather days.

As far as "where to stay", the Regency Hotel is a unique, non-chain hotel property located in the heart of the restored Old Port district -- very easy access to great restaurants, fun shops and botiques, interesting "watering holes", and the waterfront....

Portland is an amazing city to visit. It has a small town feel but there is plenty to do here. The best thing about Portland is the food! You really can't go wrong with any of the restaurants in Portland and there are a variety depending on your budget. 5-8 days isn't too long if you plan on taking advantage of all that Portland has to offer.

-Take a tour of the many islands in Casco Bay: cascobaylines.com/cruises/scenic_cruises.htm,

-Go for a running/walking tour of the city: http://www.portcityrunningtours.com/,

- Visit all the local museums.

Those are just a few ideas, but Portland has so much to offer. You really should come visit!!
