Love Old Orchard Beach

I have just read a few of the past posts. OOB is not seedy! It is a wonderful town with a beautiful beach. Yes, some of the attractions are a little honky tonk, but all the more fun. And, you posters from Mass. Do you realize how many people from your not so glorious state actually vacation and buy property here? More from Mass than Cananda!!!

And, yes, I also go to Kennbunkport, Wells, Boothbay Harbor, Bar Harbor, etc.and enjoy them. But there is nothing like the long, sandy beach in OOB.

you are right, but i hate to admit it, but there is a lot of bad doings still going on in OOB in the summer. Now i had to the nicer areas like kennebunkport, cape elizabeth and even scarborough. everyone claims the arcades and such will be leaving, but then again, the new condo owners are saying that because half of those condos arent sold. would you pay 300-400K to look out at the like of the pier and loud people and fireworks every week in the summer. for that kind of money I will get a home on the beach in Rye, Nh or Kennebunk.

Hey there Moonlight 188,

Why don't you get a place in Rye or even better, stay in Mass. Why do people come to our state because of our beautiful landscape and then try to change it all?! I do not mean to be rude, but this is our home and we are proud of it. Obviously others agree due to the fact of so many tourists. There are no more fights, drunks or any of the other derogitory comments you made about OOB than anywhere else! How about all of the Irishmen in Boston? I am sure that they are sober all of the time, NOT. Please don't dump on our home.

Old Orchard has a charm all of its own. The town has done a great job of keeping the trash picked up (that all of the people from away drop). It is picked up several times a day. There are parks to walk through, nice stores and gift type stores to shop in. A good mix of old and new.

For all of you who have not been here before, please come, enjoy our beautiful beach. Have a cocktail at the Brunswick patio bar, listen to live music and enjoy the sunshine. Grab a slice of Bills Pizza and Pier Fries and just people watch. I guarentee you will have fun!

Couldn't have said it any better than Cabosusie. There are not bad things happening in OOB. It is a great "home base" as another poster said. How can you go wrong with seven miles of sandy beach. Take your day trips to K'port, Cape Eliz., Freeport, etc. But come to the beach and ENJOY!

Moonlight: Sorry you feel that way about where you grew up. I grew up there, too. I probably wont stay in the area for the rest of my life, but will always come back to my hometown and enjoy every minute of it!

When we were walking back to our hotel from the Pier, we passed the Brunswick. They had a band outside and it looked like a fun time. We were tired by that time and just went back to the hotel.

I would recommend the Brunswick for anyone wanting to stay at OOB. LIke I said, we stayed at Waves and it was like wife-beater shirt haven.

We did eat breakfast down by Amusement area, a place called Tom's. I was reading the history of that place and we decided to give them business. My hus and I are from small country town in Michigan and we try to give locals our business.

It was fantastic breakfast!! And not hard on the wallet. We sat outside and watched the people walk on down the street...

I've lived in Maine all my life and Saco for the past 12 years. OOB was so much fun when I was a kid. Then as my awareness of surroundings increased, I found it a bit on the seedy side in the 90s. I think they've done a lot to spruce the area up in the past decade though.

Now, we go several times each summer - mostly just to hang out at the Oceanside Grille at the Brunswick. Best beach bar in the state in my opinion. Live music every day, great people watching, a nice mix of people hanging out and the food is pretty decent too.

I too love OOB. Have been going there since the 1970's - that's the last century!

OOB went thru a rough period in the late 70's and early 80's. My drunken room mate from college had to be carried out of Ebb Tide before she was stabbed by a biker she was irritating. There was a lot of trash around in those days both the human and the disposable types. I remember dancing at Whitehall too - and a band called R & R.

There was kind of an undercurrent of violence on weekend nights during the summer. The best time was in September when things had quieted down a bit but the water was still warm enough to swim in. There were always lots of laughs at Mr Goodbar's.

I like the newer, cleaner OOB but sure I miss some of the old rides where the condos are now. (I do not miss the stinky old bathrooms tho!) There is still some great people watching to be had - I didn't know teenage girls still wore those trashy fringe tops!!! But we summer regulars recognize that as a town you have your own unique problems. I watched an OOB town hall meeting with my Mom (slow night for Scrabble) and there were many complaints from locals about prostitution at the bar at the end of the pier. But that will not stop us from enjoying the sun and fun and I hope that issue gets resolved for the sake of the community.

OOB is great, it is unique - after a while - every place starts looking the same in America and I hope OOB never gentrifies to be an over regulated Disneyfied beach resort.

My husband and I "Staycation" in OOB on the weekends. We like to go to the different bars and take in the live music and dance. We have never seen or heard anything about prostitution on the pier. I think it sounds like a vicous rumor. Maybe more of the locals should get out and enjoy their town in the summer, instead of running scared.

I recently met the owner of the pier (my 20yr old works there). He didnt seem like the type that would allow that to happen. The security there is very prominent. Anybody out of line or too intoxicated are escorted down the pier, to the bottom, and asked not to return.

We have never feared for our safety in any of the bars at "The Beach" It is a very safe place to play...
