hi all! your best chance of seeing alligators will be on a trip down the creole nature trail (it is a driving trail and if you google it you can get the routes) or taking a swamp tour (breaux bridge is the closest which is about an hour or so east, i have a review in my profile for champagne swamp tours)...we love to eat lunch at pappy's which is on ryan street...they get really full at lunch time so try to get there before 12:00, they have super gumbo, muffalottas and boudin balls...also, we like steamboat bill's...there will be tons of crawfish by then and bill's boils really tasty ones, they also have a bunch of other seafood choices (they make my favorite boudin balls)...lake charles is filled with hole in the wall places with the random chain restaurant, so that won't be too much of a problem...the only "touristy" place is in sulphur is cajun charlie's and we have eaten there once which was plenty for me...honestly, and sadly, lake charles doesn't have a bunch of great seafood markets...your best bet is to find a guy on the side of the road selling shrimp or hitting jt's seafood market on lake street to see what kinds of fresh seafood they have there, which is hit or miss...if you like the cajun smoked meats like jalapeno sausage and boudin for cooking at home check out the market basket smokehouse on nelson, yum-o...darrell's on college has great sandwiches (the darrel's special in specific), nina p's on west mcneese has a good lunch and so does mr bill's on east mcneese...as far as dinner goes, try steamboat bills for cajun food or one of the other chain restaurants like texas roadhouse, outback, carino's, etc...heard that chastain's on ryan has great dinner but never ate there...for upscale dining at night try mazzen's or harlequin on college street and also snake river grille at l'auberge du lac (the casino off of prien lake)...have a blast!!!

Yeah, pretty much agree with the Creole Nature trail. Actually, you will prob see many just on the road from lake charles down to the nature trail.

They really are pretty common in the area. We used to go water sking on the Calcasieu River and saw aligators almost every trip (little ones).

Food wise, not sure about real cajun food, but Darrells Sports bar on College has REALLY good sandwiches.

Steamboat Bills has decent seafood, frontage road of I-10 just east of bridge.

I want to take my grandchildren, boy age 4 and girl age 11 on a swamp tour - they live in Houston, so I would be picking them up and then driving on to Louisiana, but don't want to have too far with them - where would be the best to book a swamp tour and place to stay so they could swim? I would welcome any additional suggests of things we could do together while there - thanks, - my email is reese1201@austin.rr.com

I fish alot down in West Cove, which is on the west side of Clacsieu Lake. The hurricanes(Rita and Ike) have really damaged the alligator population down there. I've been 3x in the past month and have not seen the first gator. I don't know if they got moved or drowned, but they are not as common anymore.
