Freedom Hall is in a sort of industrial area of town. Is it more important to be close to the venue or would you prefer to stay in an area near restaurants, nightlife etc?

The Residence Inn on Philips Lane would be close to Freedom Hall. There's also a Residence Inn downtown that is a block away from Slugger Field and within walking distance of some nice restaurants (but a bit further way). It would be an easy drive down I-65 though.

We would like to be as close to Freedom Hall as possible. Within walking distance if at all possible.

The only hotels within walking/shuttle distance are the 2 Executive Hotels. Exec East is a rat hole and is scheduled for demolition in a few months. The Executive West is being converted into a Crowne Plaza and SHOULD be pretty nice. I hope they majorly overhaul management as well, because it's been less than stellar in the past. Other airport hotels will be near the Expo center. We stayed at La Quints last year prior to an early flight and liked it. However, as mentioned, you must drive to find decent restaurants.

There are several newer, budget hotel options that you may be able to walk from near the two Execs on Phillips Lane...A Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn and, I believe Courtyard Inn by Marriott. There is also a newer Hilton Garden Inn on the Expo Center property on the north side, along with a few other budget options across the street on Crittenden Drive you can walk from.

check out the hotel on crittenden drive near central ave. they should be moderate in price and there are a couple of restaurants close by.
