Suggestions on Restaurant & things to do in area.

We will be meeting family members in a few weeks and have decided to meet each other half way which will be in the Evansville IN. or Henderson KY. areas. We are looking for good places to eat in either area. And if we have time, things to do. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately I don't have any specific suggestions, but I do have some general advice/suggestions. Hopefully a local will chime in with some, but I don't believe Evansville is a "TA hotspot." (Which is why I've gone ahead & responded.)

For restaurants you might want to check out sites that focus more on eating. TA does have restaurant reviews, rankings, etc, but I don't know anyone who uses it as their "go to" restaurant site.

I use Urbanspoon, others use Yelp (which I avoid) and there is Chowhound to name a few. I did a quick check on Urbanspoon and it looks like Evansville has the "critical mass" needed for peer driven sites to be effective. (There were roughly 20 reviews in about the last 10 days or so.) Urbanspoon will allow you to filter restaurants based on: location, cuisine, budget, etc. and you can then check "votes" and the reviews.

As for things to do, I don't know how much research you've done, but here are a couple of (semi-random) ideas:

1. There is the TA list of attractions (located on the left hand side of the forum screen), but I haven't check it out.

2. Here's the Convention & Visitor's Bureau website which includes a calendar of events and a downloadable visitor's guide which I expect would have plenty of restaurant listings/ads as well as things to do:

www.visitevansville.com

Again, sorry I can't give you any specific suggestions. About all I can add is that you might give some kind of indication about what type(s) of restaurants you're looking for (cuisine(s), budget(s), etc.) and/or the types of things you enjoy doing (music, arts, history, outdoor stuff, etc.)

Hope this helps,

hlo

Having traveled to Evansville many a time I would reccomend Madeleines. It's in the historic district and has a nice atmosphere. The menu changes but the food is excellent. If you are looking for a little less fancy/pricey I would steer you towards Lorenzo's.

Thanks for responding and the ideas! Its been along time since I was in Evansville area. We really wanted to meet up with the other 1/2 of the family around Henderson KY. area. I've posted on the KY. forum and never received a response. I'm sure there is probably some restaurants along 41 in Henderson. Thanks!

In Henderson, you are limited to an authentic Mexican restaurant, a Pizza joint, a Denny's and a Southwestern place. Unless fast food is your thing, drive 10-15 minutes to Evansville's east side and you have a huge amount of choices!

Bev,

Even though this thread is old, it's probably worthwhile for you to go ahead & make some suggestions. Based on OP's original post, it won't do the OP any good . . . but this is a low traffic forum and others are likely to see/look at this thread & your suggestions.

If Evansville had a lot of postings and threads moved off the first page quickly, I might not suggest this. But, that isn't the case. It's likely that others scanning this forum for ideas on this topic will read this thread and anything you can add will likely help them.

Thanks for reading & posting. It will be nice to have someone with first hand knowledge posting in the E-ville forum!

Things just got a little strange (I'm on my phone) and I hope this doesn't get double posted, but I'd rathe see it twice than not at all.

If you ever return here are my suggestions :

Pizza: Turoni's , main gate, roca bar, or there is a new brick oven pizza place opening ... Not open yet

Sushi: zuki, roppongi, or kanpai

Sports bar restaurant: bar Louie, old Chicago , or Bdubbs

Fast food: gd ritzys

High class: Madeleine's fusion downtown, cavanaughs by the casino boat, or there is a Spanish tapas restaurant called eclipse downtown.... Anything downtown will be fun and different but harder to find

Fish: tin fish (Newburgh), bonefish

Bar with great food : main gate (pizza), backstage(fish tacos and fry bar), gersthaus (German) , tin man (BBQ) local brewery, Riras Irish pub

I could go on but also check out www.news-4u.com if you re looking for something to do... There's more here than most people tend to share :)

If you need a place to stay: downtown on a weekend or during the week if you like to gamble there's a casino boat and a few bars... Stadium if any concerts but a little spread out. Le me rigor is nice !! Otherwise stay on the east side at Hilton garden inn, or a new marriot courtyard is being built. Lots of restaurants close by with good atmospheres... The mall isn't far either and it's right off I -164 and the lloyd expressway

As for things to do that varies depending on interest and age groups:

Into the outdoors there are several nice parks in the area - Wessleman Woods (it's in town so you do get a fair amount of traffic noise), Burdett (far West-side, a little harder to find because it is in the county not the city) good biking/walking path that conects to USI, great pool, mini golf, limied camping, cabin rentals; for a more outdoorys feel spend the 40 minutes and drive out to Harmonie State Park (between New Harmony and Mount Vernon) - great camping, cabin rentals, great hiking (it's hilly so be prepared), biking, pool (not as nice as Burdett's but cheaper), boat ramp into Wabash river; or just take a walk along the river front

Have little one's - check out Mesker Park Zoo (it's not huge and it's a work in progress but we aren't a major city either; West-side), Koch Children's Museum (downtown), Evansville Museum (river front) has a nice hands on area for the kiddo's plus some nice art displays and an area that's made to look like a city street scene showing scenes from around the late 1800's throw the "house" and "shop" windows

If the kids are a little older - everything above is a good choice but also add Bob Wather's for mini-golf (indoor/outdoor), lazer tag and acarde games, Gatti-town pizza (think Chuck E Cheese minus the creepy characters, all you can eat decent pizza instead of the frozen cardboard stuff, and aimed at a slightly older age group), Club Tabby in Eastland Mall for a little girl "makeover"

Shopping - there is Eastland Mall (eastside) it's mostly chain stores if you are from a large city skip it you'll be dissapointed; for more botique shops drive out to Newburgh, there are also some on Franklin St (West-side) and a few downtown

Food/drink - everyone else has kinda covered this one but I would add Hilltop on the West-side for some good home cooking including lots of local things you aren't going to get elsewhere (friend brain sandwhich)

Gambling - Ellis Park (technically in KY) for live horse racing and off-track betting, Casino Aztar (river front)

Historic - stroll through the historic homes just off of river front (would not suggest this after dark as you can wander from a nice area to not so nice area very quickly), 40 minute drive out to New Harmony (failed utopian society but still has lots of beautiful old buildings), Evansville musuem and check out the LST while your in the area, Angel Mounds (southside) - great history to the site but not lots to actually see you'll have to use some imagination

Depending on what season you are here there is normall some sort of festivel going on. Spring/Summer lots of churches do socials which are little carnivals with food and games (these are fundraisers for the churches but you can get some good food), lots of local car shows including the Frog Follies at the 4-H county fair grounds (North side) which attracts lots cars from across the country (I want to say this is late summer but I'm not sure on the exact date), county fairs through out the summer; Freedom Fest (they call it something else now I think) the week leading up to July 4th that ends in a great fireworks display over the river (firework dispay is free); in the fall is the Westside Nut Club Fall Fest - street fest with lots of food and ride - always the first full week of October on W Franklin St (note if you are in the area during this time it can cause some traffic issues on the west-side)

If you are in the area for a few days there are some great day trips - Spring Mill State Park (Mitchell, IN), Holiday World and Splashing Safari (Santa Clause, IN), Garden of the Gods (Shawneetown, IL), Mammoth Cave (Mammoth Cave, KY), French Lick, IN, Louisville, St Louis, Indianpolis (but that would be a long day)

Forgot a section - Sport's - there are two colleges in the area USI and Evansville both have thriving sports programs (no football); we also have the Iceman hockey team that plays at the Ford Center (downtown)and in the summer the Otters (Pioneer League Baseball) at historic Bosse Field (Northside). It might be lower level ball but tickets are super reasonable ($10), food at the park is pretty cheap and the do lots of crowd interactive games between innings. If you want true professional games you'll have to drive to either St Louis or Indianapolis both are day trips from Evansville.
