public transit in chicago

My husband and I are staying in downtown Chicago and will need to get to Northbrook Illinois and we don't have a car, is there a subway line that we can take to get there rather then a cab?

Northbook is not Chicago. You take the suburban Metra train. How are you going to get around in Northbrook once you're there? It's a bedroom community and the Metra Station is not downtown where there is no downtown. Will someone be picking you up?

The Northbroook Metra station is in the downtown area of Northbrook. There's a cab stand at the train station.

To the OP, that is the Milwaukee North line, in case you get confused on the Metra site, and it leaves from Union Station which is basically west of the Willis Tower a few blocks. When leaving from Union Station buy your ticket at a window or you will pay a surcharge on the train.

Northbrook would be one really long subway ride :)
